Had to edit that Albert. All discs aren't created equal. If it's for backups I'd recommend getting good discs like Verb Datalife Plus or something. I've got crappy old bulkpaq prodisc from only a few years ago that are just edge to edge CRC errors now.
But yeah, external hard drives are pretty cheap, as are flash drives, as are blank discs. For important stuff I wouldn't want anything less than the live copy, and two backups.
And start backing up as soon as possible too, you don't want to wait until you've got 400GB of MP3s before you decide to back up. It's not fun.

DON'T just rely on one backup as when that fails you're screwed. Always have at least 2 and store one away from the others as if you have a fire/burglary etc you could loose all in one go.0
