How would fuel costs compare between an 1.7TDi Astra estate and a 1.4 petrol engine?

Depends on the type and style of driving really - town, rural, motorways etc.
The lastest 1.4 model gets 44mpg so take off 5mpg for real world figures and that's 39mpg. If it were me I would chose the diesel because the 1.4 will be gutless in an Astra and the diesel drives betters with a torquey engine.The man without a signature.0 -

It would be mainly a case of driving into town/work and back each day (25m round trip) and occasional longer motorway drives at weekends....
Thinking I'd prefer the diesel estate to fit two large hairy hounds in the back. The Other Hairy One travels as passenger! :rotfl:0 -
I agree with viking the diesel will be more economical and nicer to drive.0
