Consider going 3rd party fire & theft depending on the value of the car.
Also you might like to try quinn direct.
You could also considre a larger excess to get the premium down.

It's still likely to be a 4 figure sum though I'm afraid.

My son got his cheapest quote from elephant.com. If you're going to occassionaly drive his car, put your name down as a named driver. Putting my husband's and my name on his insurance lowered my son's premium. He was still down as the main driver.

Be careful about being named drivers as a means of reducing insurance premiums. This is fine as long as your son really is the main driver, but if you were driving the car and had an accident, your insurance company could invalidate the insurance if they thought you were the main driver. If you have other cars, it's probably easier to prove that it was a one-off.
Once your son has passed his test, I recommend he goes for the PASS PLUS scheme, which is designed to give newly qualified drivers extra experience in road conditions, and make them safer. Once you achieve the required standard, many insurance companies will give drivers a reduced premium. If you Google PASS PLUS, you'll get further information.

I managed to get £300 off by completing the Pass Plus(which cost £100 at the time). It is counted as a year's no claims by selected insurance companies.

passplus is not relevant if you are insuring a car before they have even learnt to drive.

I've just gone through this painful process. Follow Martin's guide for finding cheap car insurance. I went all the way though it and ended up with Directline. One piece of advice, check the cost for a 17 year old with a full licence. My friend went through it found the cheapest quote, 6 weeks later her son passed his test and the insurer doubled the price! My son just passed and directline didn't increase the price at all. Still nearly £2,000 for a 17 year old fully comp with an insurance group 1 car! Expensive post code I guess.
