Best way to block in open plan staircase.

I have an open plan staircase, and 2 small children. I'm not worried about themfalling through the stairs, but the amount of rubbish they throw through the gaps between the treads is unbelieveable.

I'm going to build a stud to conceal the area under the stairs, but not too sure how to conceal the gap between the steps.

I was thinking of buying a long length of carpet runner and just fixing it top to bottom.

Anyone else have any ideas.

Friends have a spiral staircase. While their daughter was young they used a decorative plastic mesh to make it safe. They were lucky as their staircase was dark green and the mesh they got was a near perfect match.... They took it off when she got older... But as an interim solution it looked really good.
