Fittng carpet grippers

Our landing boards are in pretty bad shape and I'm going to hardboard it next week as its not very big if a bit of a daft shape.
What I need to know is do I fit the carpet grippers on top of the hardboard or only harboard between them (like underlay) and do I extend to the other room carpets so the door grippers are fitted on top of the hardboard. I ask as the carpet measurer said fit everything on top of the boarding and the carpet shop said fit to the gippers only.
So a bit confused here.
Thanks for your help.

I would go with fitting everything on top of the hardboard. Otherwise by the time you've got underlay down as well, the gripper rods might be slightly too low to secure the carpet to properly? Guess it depends how thick the hardboard is?0

We did this and only went up to the grippers and they were too low for the carpet so the hard board had to be taken back up. We were told we should have gone skirting to skirting like a new floor but havent got a clue about the door holes. I wouldnt mind knowing that myself as we've got to do the bedroom soon. Never ends this decorating:rolleyes:
