JSA & Part time work

Hi I am currently claiming JSA have been for 6 weeks now, I have the chance of part-time work covering an existing employee's 2 days off only.
This works out at 8 hrs per day with a 1 hour unpaid lunch break each day, therefore I will be paid for 14 hours. Will this affect my claim?
Many thanks in advance

not sure but I think you can only earn £5 per week before your JSA is reduced so you have to decide if you think its worth doing :)

    or £10 if you're in a couple.

Might be worth it if there's a chance it will lead to more work or you can get a decent reference out of it. Anyone looking for a job that works whislt on JSA looks like someone who wants to work.

When I asked this question at my local job-centre, they told me that the amount of any net earnings over five pounds per week would be deducted pound for pound from my JSA. So it would only be worth doing if you would earn more than your total JSA, or if this would lead to getting more work and/or a decent reference.

However, see if working for 16hours would enable you to claim any more tax credits (I think 16 hours is the threshold for WTC). Also, there used to be a "back to work bonus" whereby all the money deducted from your JSA over a period of up to six months would be paid back to you if you started full-time work. Find out if that is still available.
  • Thanks for the replies, I naively thought anything under 16 hours wouldn't affect me! Doesn't seem much of an incentive really to take this up don't think it will lead anywhere, looks like I'll have to keep looking!
    cheers
