I recall reading that BT Callsign was not available at the moment to new customers. Can any member confirm that this is still the case.

The Answer is a resounding NO. I had a BT line installed today and had ordered this service.
I was given both numbers by the on site engineer. I rang BT to check 2nd number and was told the second number was issued in error and I cannot have Call Sign with a new line - only if you have an existing BT account prior to July 2007.
:mad::mad::mad: :mad::mad::mad: I can't tell you how duped I feel, I only went to BT rather than cable for this particular feature
BT Cust Services and Sales seem unaware of this as I was told in two separate calls that this was an option available to me when purchasing a lineAlwaysOnTheGo ~ Debt Free Wannabe no 537 Motto: This Too Shall Pass Repayment Mortgage £152k Cabot £5.8k at £1 pcm[/B] Every day I wake up happy to be over the darkest days of financial gloom New Debt the remortgage at 2.27% until 11/20270 -
Yeah this feature is not available to new customers. No idea if it'll come back eitherHow does it work?
We'll give you an additional number for your phone, which will have a separate ringing tone when it is called. Who you give your Call Sign number to is down to you. It could be your children's friends, or an elderly relative, so you immediately know it's them when the phone rings. You can also use it to separate business and personal calls, or calls from fax machines.
If your BT phone line was connected after 01/08/07 this feature is currently unavailable on your line.0 -
Strangely enough managed to order it the other day on a line fitted in Sept 07, and quickly cancelled it because
1. The second number rang the same as first,no difference in ringing tone.
2. I started to get loads of junk calls on the second number, as they had allocated me a recently used number.
I am now using a voip geographical line to a dedicated handset.0 -
If you've got broadband, there's no point to CallSign, as this can be facilitated using VOIP.
I presume that one of the reasons they've stopped this service is beacuse it is cheaper to get a broadband service with a router and therefore use VOIP to provide the second line.
It may also have been uneconomic, forced on them by Ofcom or may be something to do with LLU.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
Call Sign is quite useful if you have a fax machine and you don't want to rent a second telephone line for it. Can you put a fax machine on a VoIP number?0

I have Call Sign and it cannot be used to route to a fax machine, all calls arrive on the same physical line.
What is the above post leading up to?0 -
I had to give up Callsign as moved the BT line to Virgin media. Found a nice replacement in the form of 2 numbers from Soho66, one for Fax-to-Email and one for Voice. The neat thing is that outside of office hours the voice line can be auto diverted to email (you click the attachment to play it) and caller numbers of missed calls are acquired too.0

Not our ancient fax machine! Never mind, left BT and moved everything to the virtual cloud.0

I know this post is old from last year but I thought I would let any followers that I have had call sign for a year now on my phone line installed only in 2009 when I returned to BT.
I use it in conjunction with a couple of 0871 numbers I use for work. I also had issued with the first number that was provided which I kept getting nuisance calls, it was promptly changed.
You can only use it with a standard phone ring not any polyphonic ring tones.
It currently costs £3 per month for the service.0
