08702

hi my wife checked our phone bill on bt's web site & found that since the 1st of jan this year 257 08702 calls have been made from my phone line & are still being made all around the clock when we're in or out, at work, in bed or even when we were away for the weekend the calls last for seven seconds every time but the cost is adding up & the advisors at bt say they can't block the number from being called, bt say they are checking it out but where do i stand for paying for the calls one bt person said last night that there was a fault in the exchange & if i called the billing department this morning they would cancel the calls but when i called this morning they wouldn't

ddo you have a Virgin Media Tv box, or an alarm system that dials out, could be the boxes are faulty and continually dialling ??

Sounds like you have a dialler on your pc. Unplug your pc from the phone socket whenever you are not using the internet. If the calls stop, you have a dialer. I do not know how to stop it, but I am sure someone on here will know.

Hi mosserbett, It does not sound like a PC dialler for 2 reasons, they almost certainly use an 09** number which makes them more money than an 0870 number and the PC would have to be switched on when those calls were made and you said you were away when some were made.
You have not said whether you have a Virgin or Sky box or an alarm system connected to the phone. This sounds like a more likely explanation.
Why not post the complete number to see if anyone recognises it, or google it to see if others have suffered.

My money's on a burglar alarm making (allegedly) daily 'healthcheck' calls (and giving the burglar alarm company a small cut of the call cost in addition to their monthly/annual fee).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hi again i have a sky box but the phone line isn't connected & i have a adt alarm system but i'm not with them anymore but they never took the system out so when i read that reply last night i had a good look at the phone socket it's behind my setee and there's a seperate phone socket behind a unit that adt must have put in & the phone wire from that socket pops up from under the carpet into the bottom of my main phone socket so i cut the wire last night waiting now till tomorrow to see if there have been anymore calls sinse last night also bt have rung to say they can't find a fault with my line the number is 08702 430023, 287 calls up to now
  • Thanks Heinz it was my burglar alarm Adt never came to remove it when we stopped using it so we thought we would keep it because the box on the outside would be a good deterrent but something went wrong with the system at the end of last year and an alarm in the keypad was going off all the time with a battery symbol on the screen, after a few hours i'd had enough & took the front of the keypad off & ther was a small speaker so i ripped it out with a pair of pliers & thought nothing about it but that must have started the adt system ringing that 08702 number but we don't use the same phone number now so they couldn't contact me so it had been calling for almost 2.5 months, so when Heinz mentioned the burglar alarm i checked round the back of the sette and my units & found another phone socket that led into the bottom of my phone socket so i cut the cable & hey presto they have stopped so thanks Heinz:T

It will obviously be calling because there is no power (hence the battery symbol) and possibly detected tampering.
