I've finished my notice period - still no start date!

I'm not sure if you could claim benefits for this week, Bluenose, especially since you have given up the old job voluntarily. But as I say, I'm not sure, so perhaps someone like Stazi who knows a lot about benefits will be along to answer.
Was it your old line manager that forgot to send the reference? If so, that must be really annoying for you!
But good luck when you start next week; hope your new job is everything you're hoping for.

Sorry to drag this up again - it seems that reference has not been sent in and I'm still awaiting a start date.
Should I give up hope or can I nominate someone else as a reference to speed it up? Its very fustrating.0 -
Speak to the HR manager of the new company and ask their advice, they may be prepared tro accept a different reference.
In the meantime, you might consider registering with a temping agency, at least it will keep the wolf from the door.I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -

If they have some of your references, I would have thought they would take you on and then get rid of you within the first 6 months if the remaining reference is no good - I know this is what happens at the (large) company I work for. Did you get this job via an agency or direct with the employer?0 -

This was direct from the employer which is the city council. I'm worried as I am losing money and I'm in financial need also I just want to start! I am thinking of joining a temping agency just to get somewhere.0 -
Councils are a nightmare to deal with - either try and get some temp work, or go true MoneySaving and start selling stuff you don't want on eBay!
Sorry I can't be more help
