I've finished my notice period - still no start date!

5 weeks ago, I had been offered the job as an Admin Assistant at a council run nursing home. I signed the CRB form, and other forms. My referees gave their references, and the CRB check came back positive 2 weeks ago. I also had a pre-employment medical and I am fit for the job.

I've completed my notice period at work, and told everyone there I will be starting next week. Downer is - I dont have a start date. I rang my new employers up and they said the manager isnt in until Monday. This is going to put me in limbo as I need to know when to start, do I get half a months pay and what I am going to do for money.

Shall I hold out until Monday or take this further?

What did your offer letter say? Did it have any information on when you would be starting? I am not sure how you can 'take this further' if the manager is not there. You won't get paid until you start work. Have you signed a contract yet?
nothing to see here, move along...

It said I had the job, subject to all clearances which is references, CRB and medical. All are of a good standard, but the medical wasnt until Tuesday. She did say she would ring but she hasnt, neither my mobile, work or home!

I've signed no contract at all, and now I want to know what is going on as the nursing homes come under the adult care and communities thing.
  • You should not have resigned until you had a firm start date and contract offer

It seems to me they could still pull out of this offer

Well if the worst happens, I have a back-up plan in which I've seen a couple of jobs to apply for. I supposed to be moving out soon, and if that happens I could land up on the dole again and I wont be able to move out :( I was told it would be mid-March and why would they have the medical?

Dont panic, wait for the manager to come back on Monday, and phone again.
I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.

    Hi Bluenose,

If the medical was only on Tuesday, the manager may not yet have had official word back from the Doc that it's clear, or if it has come back the manager might not have seen it if they've been off. They won't give a start date until the process has completed, ie they've got all the official "bits of paper" back.

I know from my experience of this process that there isn't the expectation that the new employee would start right away once this process is completed unless they are currently not working. We only expect the employee to hand in their notice once we've let them know all is well and we then issue the start date after consulting them about their notice period and factoring this in.

Hopefully the manager will be able to act on Monday when they return to work and you'll be able to start very soon.
  • Thank you for your advice all :)

She might have been off all week the manager, so Monday she'll get a surprise. It's just, I've been telling people that I start next week and I dont want to be a mug and miss out on money plus it's a dream job.

I think there's a distinct possiblity that when you speak to her on Monday she'll be absolutely delighted when she finds out you can start right away because it's quite likely that she's thinking she'll have to wait perhaps another month for you. :)

    Good luck when you start!

Thank you very much :) I am thinking that myself. Also, she may have sent something out yesterday or Tuesday and with the post being a bit behind, I may know tommorow or Saturday.
  • Just to inform you, I wont start now until the 18th as my line manager forgot to send her reference in!

I'll get official confirmation on Wednesday about everything, though this is taking the mickey as I am going to lose money. Can I apply for a temp benefit for this week?
