Seller won't take Paypal - what is the safest other way to pay?

  • Thanks Steve, that's a good idea.

I've politely told the seller that I will only pay by Paypal. I even offered to pay their Paypal fees.

Funnily enough, they have had two other auction in the past week where they have accepted Paypal. That looks suspicious to me (as they refuse to do so for my auction), but they have also had positive feedback from both of those auctions.

but that could be from hijacked accounts?
    helpful tips
    it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
    their - 'owned by them'
    they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)

Very true, or from accounts they've created themselves.

I think I'll ask to withdraw the bid.

God I wish I'd never bothered!

It might be worth safeguarding your £500 and risking a neg.
The seller should be able to offer the item to the next bidder.

Its strange the seller accepts paypal for some items and not others.

He may be afraid of disputes/chargebacks for some reason.

I know he states no collections, but test the water. tell him you have an aunt/uncle/brother/sister in that area and ask if they could collect it with cash as it is a high value item. Im 99.999% sure he will say no.

I agree with the others and say run awayyyyyyy
  • Situation resolved. Ebay have cancelled the sellers account (nothing to do with me, but I suspect it might have had something to do with other folks on here) so I don't need to pay for the item.

Thank you very much for everyone's help. :T

I will try to be less dumb next time! And resist a shifty-looking bargain.

Hello, I've bought an item on ebay for £500 (I know, I know). The seller doesn't accept Paypal, just bank transfer and cheque.

The seller has almost no feedback, and I only have a 'yahoo' email address for him, although I have requested a mailing address to send a cheque to.

I'm very nervous about paying by cheque, as the guy could surely just take my money and run. Do I have any fraud protection from the bank if I pay by cheque? Is there any other decent way to pay that does have fraud protection? I've asked the seller and he's not interested in accepting Paypal or Nochex.

    Thanks for any advice.

Scammers rarely ask for cheques as that reveals their address, they prefer "safe" forms of payment like paypal which leaves no trail...

If you're worried, why not collect it in person?

I know we usually overlook your unique views but as per the post previous to yours the seller is now NARU so thankfully the OP is safe.
