damn dvd rewriter

I have a samsung external dvd rewriter and for a while have had no problem burning videos etc from my pc onto the blank dvds - in the last week however the drive suddenly thinks that it is just a cd drive. if you click onto my computer to see what drives are there it will show it as DVDRW if the drawer is open but if you put a blank dvd in and shut the drawer it reverts to CD Drive. I have checked everything and can't see where i am going wrong - can anyone please help me? :A

This has happened to me in the past when I have put a blank CD in the tray. Are you 100% sure the disc you are putting in is a DVD not a CD?

yeah - mitsubushi ones - i have 4 of them and have tried all 4 to make sure they arent duds and labelled wrong but to no avail

Tell me to stop if I'm suggesting the blindingly obvious, but are the discs DVD RW and not DVD R? Also, are they the correct format, ie. DVD+ or -R? One final point is that I have never used Mitsubishi discs before, we use Verbatim or Taio Yuden. I have had problems with cheaper discs before when they just won't work in our drives...

they're the same discs i've used loads of times before and the right format - can't find any info online to help with problem

This same problem happened to me a few weeks ago my dvd drive was happily burning dvd off of a spindle of 50 and about 20 in it started to think it was a cdrw, after much beard stroking and head scratching and general thunking I tried something that sorted the problem out.

I went out and bought some different brand blank dvds, 100 for £9.01 thanks to MSE, and to date I havent made a single beer mat.

So if youve got any friends or family with some different brands of blank dvds blag one and see if it works
