Hi let me first star
t by saying thank you for taking the time to read this. :T
PS THIS WILL BE LONG SO PREPARE. AKA GET COMFORTABLE.

if you know about ;

1. SAVING MONEY

2. MOTABILITY CAR SCHEME

3.YOUNG PEOPLES INSURANCE.

IF YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT THESE THEN ITS PROBABLY NOT WORTH READING. Thanks anyways. peace out.

Anyways to the point. I am a 20 year old male. Currently cruising through my driving lessons. In september (roughly) i will PASS my Test. Then starts the problems. I dont have a car. And i probably couldnt afford one either.

Income - 5.50 per hour, petrol cashier at morrissons supermarket plc. Over staffed wher i am, which means i cant get more hours. Also i dont want any more because the people are horrible and lazy. monthly income around 300-350 pounds.

Anyways, since i am A YOUNG NEW DRIVER my insurance will be extortionate. 2000 atleast.

The Car several thousand.

plus petrol, road tax etc.....

It all adds up to a hefty sum.

however, the reason I NEED a car is because my mum..
She is disabled and needs a car to get around. She wants me to be her Designated driver. So is the motability scheme an option? And is it reasonable annaul price for the service

so i need to know.....

Is motabilty a cost effective option compared to young drivers costs?
Or Is there a cheaper way to get a car and insurance for a young driver?
can a driver under 21 get insurance cover from the motabilty scheme?

Ps. Ive google searched and looked on government sites. Cant find info anywhere. Thats why im here.

I'm assuming you Mum can qualify to have a car on MFL then?

All MFL cars come with the tax, servicing/repairs and insurance sorted.

the only cost to you/your Mother is the fuel. And possibly a deposit if you chose something outside of the normal MFL stuff.

Tho i'm not too sure about the named driver being under 21 and if that affects anything. You'd have to contact MFL regarding that.

5.50 per hour - I heard the min wage is going up soon to 5.75 I think! hurrah!

    Horray indeed!
however the feul is not the only cost.
The money used to finance the vehicle is taken from my
mother dissabilty transport costs. 45 POUNDS a week.
    its not exactly free.
    so 45x52 = 2340 pounds a year.
Sounds really good, but the car is always oned by the scheme. (on contract hire) and the insurance might make it much more.

    Thanks for the reply.

what i really need to know is....Is it a good deal?

Kind of. Tho you'd have to enquire on the insurance side of things.
But remember that you ONLY have to fuel it up as the rest of the running costs are built into the scheme.

Or you chose to have the full money and buy a very cheap car that can used as and when, depending on what type of useage your mother will need it for...

    2 very good websites:

    http://www.motability.co.uk for the scheme

    http://www.motability.royalsun.co.uk/fullsite/index.asp for the insurance

If you follow the 'contact' links in both sites you will find out who to talk to for specifc information .e.g insurance minimum age etc.
  • Yes in my opinion its a good deal.

You cound spend £2k on insurance at your age.

theres no running costs, and if you were to buy the same car yourself you'd probably suffer £2500 in deprectiation. £45 a week is a cheap rental scheme

why would you want to own a depreciating assett.

not sure about the age thing but if you are named on your mums policy, it should it go towards a no claims bonus for you in later years.
Started comping September. wins so far.

    thanks for that opinion .
it was exactly what i was thinking. i just needed assurance that its not something that would be more expensive in the long run.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Great idea however the car will not be YOUR little runabout, its for your mums mobility needs. Wether your mum only wants it to go shopping twice a week or a day out at weekends, then thats all it should be used for.

They also use up most of your mums DLA payment which is £55 odd quid a week, so she would be loosing over £200 a month.

If you are under 21 you will need to speak to the insurance company that does mobility as some of the car engine sizes depends on if you can drive the car and sometimes you have to be either 25 or under 25 and named on the insurance policy. It is higher excess as well if you have an accident, or if the car gets nicked.
Also you need to read all about the mobility scheme as I think that you are only insurance if you have the person in the car who claims mobility or going out on their behalf, and check on this.

I don't think that it is in your best interest if you need a car and going to use your mums mobitity car for your own benefit. I do not mean to be harsh, but if you have an accident then the consequences could be a lot worse for you and your mum and your mum's mobility car.

Can i just say that just because someone is disabled it doesnt mean that they would only leave home for shopping and the odd day out. my mum copes rather well considering her disability and has a fullfilled life regardless.
she is out to the bingo almost everyday infact :P This vehicle would be a big help for her. Also there is no need to stereotype me into the average, media portayed young male. In my previous posts i gave no information which would lead you to believe i needed the car for own benifits. Thanks for your concern regardless of how missplaced it was.
