I had my booking appointment at home at 10 weeks then had the first scan at the hospital at 12 weeks. The booking appoinment was with my midwife and was when I gave her all our family history, details and so forth. We then had the initial scan and had the results posted to us. When we recieved the results we made our next midwife appointment. We live in kent if that helps.0

I have my scan at 12 weeks and a short appointment with the midwife after which involved bloods, BP, urine, height and weight, and a cosy chat about diet etc.
My booking in appointment was at 17 weeks. This involved a really long chat where they took my full medical history and the doppler to hear baby's heartbeat. My first proper appointment with the community midwife was at 20 weeks. Same week as 20 week scan.
It really does vary from area to area so please call the hospital to find out.
My OH is busy at work but always makes time for the scans. (We've had 6 so far for various reasons) He also makes time to call me after each antenatal appointment as well to check everything is ok. If your wife is ok to get to the hospital/doctors by herself or with her mum than let her. Save your holiday for emergencies and when the baby is born.0 -
Just another thought! If your OH does go to the full booking in visit alone, make sure she knows any medical history that you, your parents and your grandparents may have. They will ask if there are any instances of things like asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes etc., on your side of the family. Here I go again on my own....0

It's at the maternity ward of the hospital.
Surely there has to be a scan at some point otherwise how would we know it's going ok, I thought the scan was when it was official that you could tell people and stuff and that happened at 12 weeks?
Obviously I want to be at the scan but if this appointment is just some blood tests and a cosy chat she can go with her Mum whilst I save my holiday for the important bits.
Your reference to the baby being OK will relate to the fetal anomaly scan at 20-21 weeks. Any USS early on in pregnancy will be a dating scan. These are not done by all areas, and if certain of dates, there is no indication.
I'm a Midwife and the only scan that I had was a 20 week scan - didn't need a dating scan and wouldn't have had one if offered on anyway.
So, to answer your original question, the booking appointment will be just that - a consultation. And, yes, you may have different appointments in quick succession as they are done by different depts.
Hope this is helpful.0 -
Hi, i went for my first scan at 11 weeks-here it is on average between 10-12 weeks. This confirms the date, checks the baby is ok and had my bp checked etc. Im going back at week 20 for the anomoly (not sure if ive spelt like right) scan, which will look more in depth and check for downs etc.
I've seen the midwife several times already, probably more then usual because of high bp and im on meds for that (that needed changing too). Ive had blood tests taken, handed in urine samples and had lots of questions asked for the records etc.
Ive also got another scan booked for week 22, but not sure it everyone gets that routinely or if its because of my bp etc/complications.

Booking appointments are usually with the midwife, sometimes they come to your home, they did on my first, but on this one i went straight to the hospital to be consultant lead.
It was a nice surprise as i was scanned when i went there and then a 12 week scan will happen in the next week or so.
Some people say they wont try and hear a heartbeat until 16 weeks, but mine tried at 11.
Differs all around!Treat everyday as your last one on earth! and one day you will be right.0 -
my booking visit was about an hour long lots of questions about my medical history weather there was any history of downs other gentic disorders in either family, lots of stuff about diet, pregnancy health, where did i want to have baby, didnt take oh as he would have been bored to death but he came along for the scans and shead a few tears (which i found hilarous)twins on board0

I had the first scan at 12 weeks and it took place at the hospital, I had a booking visit with the midwife at my GP's shortly before, it's generally to talk you through, look at any problems there might be. Some midwives will do a pregnancy test to confirm you are pregnant, some don't. Congratulations!!:A :
