water filter cartridges

I'm trying to work out the best (or cheapest) way to filter our tap water.

I've got a water filter jug as our tap water doesn't taste that nice and in theory I think the cartridge is meant to be changed every 4 weeks or so, but I'm finding that after only about two weeks our water is already getting 'flaky' again with limescale.

I see there are different filters/jugs available, and I was wondering if it would improve things if I were to get a different one? (I'm using the Brita Classic at the moment) Does anyone have any recommendations?

We use the older Aqua Optima double life filter system in our house and argos was doing 3 packs for £20 just recently (although i note now its expired :()

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001001&langId=-1&searchTerms=Aqua+Optima&x=0&y=0#tab3

Now £9.99 but thats for 120 days filteration.

You get around 60 days worth of filteration per cartridge (in reality likely less than that) and they work great.

We bought a Sabatchi kettle from Wilko's which was on offer sometime ago (£10 i think and its fab) which takes the cartridges and we use a water jug we got free from Amazon which again takes the cartridges.

Our tap water is full of chlorine to the extent you can smell it when you run the water but i have to admit these get rid of that and god knows what other nasties that are in place.

In fact we've just stopped buying bottled water now in favour of using these and cooling in the fridge.

Waste of time those jug ones.

If you can get one that livse under the sink and connects to the cold water pipe and feeds a seperate small tap. Very easy to fit and a lot cheaper. £75 for the initial kit including a cartridge whist lasts 12 months, replacement cartridges are about £18.

Got mine from a company called fountain filters.

I don't know how good they are but there are cheaper ones available at prices like £30 or so.

One for £60 is advertised on that site as well so the £25 isn't necessarily a bargain - looks like its a very basic taste/smell filter. The more expensive ones get rid of lots of scary sounding things:
Coconut shell Activated Carbon Block cartridge for Volatile Organic Compounds (eg pesticides, herbicides..), PAHs, Trihalometanes (carcinogenic chlorine disinfection byproducts), pharmaceutical residues, endocrine disruptors hormones and deals with taste and odour problems by filtering out chlorine and sediments.

I didn't buy it out of any paranoia I must add, purely to stop me needing to visit scummy Tesco to buy their bottles.

    Thanks for your replies.
I will take a look at the Sabatchi kettle.
We live in rented property, so unfortunately the water filter kit that attaches to the tap wouldn't really be do-able.
