Buying A Moped

IMO alarms are fairly worthless, spend the money on a decent lock and always lock up to a solid un-movable object
Also personally buy 2nd hand as you'll lose a lot on buying new
And do a search on here this has been discussed quite a bit before0 -
thanks for the replies
Will be buying him good helmet, jacket and gloves - will need decent lock.
Still not sure of which one to buy though - difficult when talking to dealers as they are going to be biased.
Re 2nd hand Mopeds,as I know nothing about them - apart fom the obvious questions re servicing, and seeing the various scratches on the thing, wouldn't know what to look for. Whilst I know he will drop it/come off any moped I get for him - the peace of mind of buying a new one is what I'm paying the extra dosh for.
Does anyone know of any dealer discounts that can be negotiated?0 -
Hi I have a kymco miler 125 and has been really reliable, best bit of advice I can give you is to make sure he is aware that people DO NOT see mopeds and bikes so he must be visible with safety clothing etc and to always do his life saver checks. Wish him happy and safe motoring lol0

Bought my lad a new Peugeot Speedfight, cost £1599, two and a half years ago. despite there being 3 dealers in a 20 mile radius from us, none of them would offer any discount at all, the best they would do was a free helmet.A new dealership has opened and offers free CBT with every bike so thats about £100 saving. It has been pretty reliable and in my opinion, was worth every penny as he had a split timetable at college and football training 2 or 3 times a week.
He went on to pass his car test, after 25 lessons, his Instructor told him he could always tell who had been riding a moped as their road sense was so much greater than those who hadn't.
His brother has now taken over the "ped" and is benefitting in a similar fashion. I hope he will get a couple of years out of the bike and I doubt it will be worth anything then but it will have been money well spent, certainly more convenient and probably cheaper than all the bus fares.0 -
Thanks SmoSmo and Pompeyrich.
Sound advice to tell him assume other road users wont see him.
I am also leaning towards the Peugeot Speedfight - I note several models some with rear disc brakes and others with water cooled as opposed to air cooled. I am likely to go with the one with disc brakes - ? added safety.
My son in his enthuisiasm is wanting it 'derestricted' - I believe that the law says they are restricted for 16 year olds for a reason!0 -
Personally I'd go for a Gilera/Piaggio. Ignore the aircooled v watercooled argument at 30mph it's complete !!!!!!!!. Disc brakes are a bonus. I'd go for the Gilera Runner 50
If he derestricts it, then it will become a motorcycle instead of a moped, which your son will not be legally able to ride until he is 17.
Make sure he has a decent lock, the Almax chain is one of the only ones on the market which isn't croppable with bolt cutters.
Ensure he always wears motorcycle gloves as if he comes off (which is unfortunately likely) the palms of his hands will be the first thing to make contact with the road. Many people wear normal gloves which I was warned would burn from friction in the event of an accident.0
