Well no offence but theres not a lot people on a forum can do. If BT have given you a new number but its awaiting being activated then they will be the people who can help you.
How this constitutes a rip off I don't know, they've changed the number as per your request?0 -

Give BT a chance. Sound like they are doing what they can to help you. There is no-one else who can help, in these circumstances.
BT certainly have not ripped you off. You have just been unfortunate that the previous occupant seems to have been a bit of a scallywag. Nothing that BT can do about that, apart from offer you a change of number; which they have done.
The only advice I can give is to unplug your phone for a few hours and try again later. Maybe the number will have been changed by then.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Do you have caller display?
Note the numbers and don't answere the calls.
When you have the new number all will be well again.
And make sure you are ex-directory or they may get your new number.0 -
If the order has only been placed today then you will have to wait 3 working days for the number to change.
As for rip off, I don't know how, after all they haven't charged you to have the number changed. If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.0 -
It is standard practice to give a new occupant the number already existing on the line. Having retired from BT I can assure you that they will do every thing they can if you are receiving nuisance calls (which these are) Sometimes numbers can be changed remotely but usually they require exchange work. This requires a visit to the exchange in question which probably isnt manned. Please give it time. After all BT didnt know the previous occupant had gone bankrupt.0

With the new WLR3 system its next to impossible to do, unless its a home-move customer on the old billing system.
Is that why so many new customers are being charged the £125 connection charge, even though there is a working line present? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
No clue, I was just told that on the WLR3 you cant provide the old telephone number. Something about DPA was mumbled at me then. The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 20
