Something to bear in mind also about SP - they adjust your dd EVERY QUARTER to take into account your current useage.

I think in 3 years they've adjusted my DD twice after rice rises/falls, no where near being changed every quarter, unless useage is very variable or out of profile I can't see they'd go to teh effort of amending customers DD's every few months

woby - I questioned this, but this is what I was told by sp. Whether it's on new accounts (I'm in a brand-new house as of last september) or on accounts opened after a certain date, but they were specific that it would vary every qtr.

surley if they adjust it every 3 months , it stops people getting too far in debit with them ?

Yes quite right I was with powergen before and I ended up owing - I would rather overpay and make sure I am in credit when my bill is calculated rather than in debt.:T

I have had problems with SP twice over DD's. I was paying about £48 and had money building up then before Christmas they sent me a check for nearly £300... typically my usage has gone up due to winter time and a new born baby.... so now they have upped my DD to nearly £100!! If they hadnt sent me the cheque I wouldnt have had to pay more.

Have done a comparison on Uswitch and that says cheaper to change but when I go onto the new suppliers site and do a check it says the 'saving' would only be minimal so dont know whether to change or not ?

Are you entering your consumption in kWh or your current monthly payment? Comparison sites are useless unless you enter actual annual consumption.

We are on the standard tariff and even a Scottish Power meter reader told us to change as we were throwing money away. We phoned them up , tried to change to D/D, and they asked us for £45 a month when we at present spend £36/£40 on the quarterly bill. Its mad.We said no, just forget it !

Well, rather than just saying "forget it", you should have said "I'm paying £40 on quarterly statement, DD saves us 5% so I should be paying £38. Please set my DD at £38".

I did the comparison using bith consumption and the monthly payment and both savings seem less so not sure what to do ?

Reading through the posts, if Kwh are the only true reading is there an equasion to apply to change gas units into Kwh? and the same for electricity?
I have been thinking about leaving Npower and joining SP fixed rate tarriff, which from the comparison sites will cost me roughly what I pay now, but I would like to double check with what Cardew and MarkyMarkD say is the only true way.
