Freeview/sky.

Options
Hi all,
Have just moved into my new place. Unfortunatley, the TV signal is awful. The previous owners had sky tv installed and the dish and wiring are still present. Not wanting to have to purchase Sky tele, one of my friends said I could get a freeview box, and get someone to re-allign the dish. Is this true? Any ideas would be welcome - thanks.

    Hi

    Freeview does not need a dish.

    Most UK homes are in a FREEVIEW coverage area. Use our postcode checker to see whether your postcode can receive FREEVIEW. If you are in coverage you should be able to receive FREEVIEW with your existing rooftop or loft aerial, provided they are in good condition. However, you may still experience poor quality digital reception and therefore need to get your aerial installation checked.

    In some parts of the country FREEVIEW signals use a different frequency or transmitter from your existing analogue service and therefore we recommend you fit a “wideband” type of aerial. Our postcode checker tells you if this applies to where you live.

    Please check with your retailer first in case you need to upgrade your rooftop or loft aerial.

    Your local electrical retailer store or aerial fitter should be able to arrange an aerial survey and upgrade if required, and will advise you of any related charges. Alternatively you can contact your local Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI) aerial fitter for advice at www.cai.org.uk, or see the Yellow pages for further details.

    Please note it is unlikely that you will be able to receive good quality digital reception through a set-top aerial and if possible we suggest you upgrade to either a rooftop or loft aerial.

    What you need is to look at https://www.freesatfromsky.com .

    Essentially, you've got two ways forward;

    - for £150 they'll install a dish and receiver and give you a card which gives you access to the free channels.
    - however, given you've already got a dish, suggest getting a receiver from ebay/your local 2nd hand TV dealer, and then Sky will sell you a viewing card for £20. If you're lucky, the previous owners may have left the viewing card behind so you'll save £20.

    Not sure that you can, officially, but I do know of people who've bought 2nd hand units with them in and they've worked for the free channels.

  • Strictly according to the conditions you signed up for when getting Sky or the freesat card you can't transfer the card to a third party - mainly to protect against people getting them and shipping them abroad.
    There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

    In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

    Absolutely correct and not only that the card remains the property of sky at all times :(
