HI
I want to buy a surround sound system to play movies and listen to music on, maybe with a usb input also.
My last system was cheap and the quality when playing music cd's was very bad.
Can anyone recommend a system that will sound good with movies and music.
Cheers

you should probably suggest how much you want to spend as they vary from under £100 to 10's of thousands.0

Will pay approx £300 for the right system.0

Have a look in this month's Custom PC as there are a few articles on computer sound.
If you are willing to wait a few weeks it'll appear on their website0 -
How about:
Yamaha RX-V361 - http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-RXV361 £119.95
Yamaha N-SP110 -
http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=YAMA-NSP110 £79.95
If you want a USB input on the DVD player:
Philips DVP5980 -
http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=PHIL-DVP5980 £69.95
otherwise
Daewoo DV500 http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=DAEW-DV500 £39.95
Add about £20 for basic interconnects, and about £32 for 5 year supercare.
You might also want a pair of stereo speakers for your music; e.g. http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=ELTA-MONITOR3BCH for £69.950 -
It depends what your looking for, you can pick up inexpensive all in one box setups for not much money. but you may be disapointed with the results.
I would look in to buying a seperates system, an AV receiver, set of speakers and then your sources. a DVD player will play CD's but a dedicated CD player is better. Get down to your local hifi shop and have a listen take your own cd so you can listen to the same track on each system so you can compare them equally.
Unfortunatly £300 isnt a lot when it comes to seperates systems but it does give you the opertunity to build your system slowly, receiver, front speakers, and a source to start then buy the other speakers and extra sources.0 -

Also, I've now had two all-in-one systems just burn themselves out; a Venturer from Tesco for about £100, within the warranty period, and a Samsung from John Lewis that originally sold at about £200 at about 3.5 years old (power amplifier fault, as far as I can determine). I've never had consumer electronics die for no reason and so quickly before, so I can only assume that there's a big quality problem at the low-end of the market. I've given up, and bought the RX-V361/N-SP110/DV500 system I spec'ed above from Richer Sounds, in spite of the additional cost and lower level of convenience.0 -
There is a JVC THL1 (or something like that) that runs ipods in a cradle.
Yamaha do packs with the RV361 and speakers called AV61 package in the UK.
Pixmania do the European version of the Yamaha packs AV3101 & 4101, the latter having USB built in and HDMI passthrough.
I have been deabting a long time abut getting the Yamaha stuff, after much reading on AV forums.
With summer nearly round the corner though my hibernation period will be ending and TV/Games/Movies won't be high enough on the agenda.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

I'd stick to good quality brands, personally I'd consider: Yahama, Denon and TEAC to start with, if your £300 with get anything within those range, but the budget it limited.
Lots of discussions and advice about this at www.avforums.com You are definitely going to be limited with your budget.
I'd also have a look in What Hi-Fi and similar AV mags at the newsagents too...0 -
Ended up buying a Sony DAV-DZ230 system, over the moon with it. DVD picture and Music quality is superb.
Got it for £179 from Currys with a free scart lead.
Plug my laptop audio in and it plays MP3's also.
Cheers
