I tried this a couple of years ago. A woman came to see me and offered me an area to cover which was about seven miles.
She then said their would be an induction course where i and others would get to learn how to use the machine used when you deliver a package and general other help.
She got in touch and gave me a time and place, then at the last miniute she told me it was cancelled and gave me another date. This happened twice and since have never heared anything more from her.
Then six months ago out of the blue a guy phoned me and asked if i was still interested, i told him about the previous waste of time and he told me i had defenetley got the area and would get back in touch
GUESS WHAT Still waiting to this very day
Hope you have more luck than me
  • Any updates on the courier interview? I have applied for this myself and interested to know if its worthwhile.

Hi there, no-one has contacted me to arrange the interview!!!
I really am a bit doubtful but if offered the opportunity I will take the interview. Good experience if nothing else!

What do you think - anyone with experience of this?

I work for Parcelnet, doing much the same thing.

I started about two years ago, and work out of my garage. I contacted my car insurers (Direct Line), and they said that as long as my occupation was on their system, I would be covered during my working time. I have a Ford Focus, and it's big enough.

    I have on average 45 - 50 parcels a day.

It's an Ideal job for me, I only do three days, I split the round with another girl, she does the other three days (athough I think DHL only require deliveries from Monday to Friday).

It's the best job I've had, I've always worked in offices, secretarial and such. I love this job, my parcels arrive, I sort them, plan my route and when they are delivered, that's it. Send the paperwork back next day and get paid monthly.

The only advice I would give is take time in organising the parcels, planning a route carefully so you don't double back on yourself, and load the parcels into the car as you want to take them out. That will save time, you won't be searching for them in the wind and rain.

The first month will be the hardest, finding places (even though I have lived here all my life, it still takes time to find some places, there is no rational reason for the way some streets are numbered). After the first month, you will probably have visited all of your regular customers at least once. There will always be the odd new one, but mostly you will be returning to places already visited.

There will be extra fuel costs, and you have to factor this is, but I earn quite well considering I only work three days a week, for about 3 or 4 hours a day.

I did see DHL advertising in my area. They seem to be just starting out with the local courier set up. You may not have many parcels to begin with, but I'm sure they intend to grow this area of their business.

It's worth having a go at, and you can always fill in the application form on the Parcenet website http://www.parcelnet.co.uk/images/header_mid_spacer.gif click on 'recruitment' at the top of the page and fill in the form.

Parcelnet will contact you should they need someone in your area. They often need cover for holidays etc, and also people to do catalogue distribution at times throughout the year.

Hope that helps, and happy delivering.:)
  • Have just been on the jobcentre plus website and dhl are advertising for couriers but this time, they say you have to send off for an application form from Northampton and the hours are between 15-30 per week. I wonder if this is for the same job. It doesn't state about delivering within 2-3 miles of your home either.
