Garden Decking

Options
I'm looking at building some garden decking. Anyone any good sites that will show me how to go about it? I looked around Jeeves and Google but there's nothing jumping out at me:-(

Also, any known good suppliers in the Edinburgh area?

Thanks

    Hi

My o/h has just built 2 of these from argos at £299.99 each.

Only have to cut the ballustrading section to size the rest is precut.

Detailed instructions of how to put it all together so you can price the wood needed if you just want the base, which is the easiest part to do.

Most of the DIY chains (in the South) have leaflets giving advice on planning and building decks, using their own brand products, however this is a good place for background reading. Plan using graph paper, or on computer if you have a design programme, and then purchase materials rather than buying a kit - local builders merchants can often be cheaper than the DIY stores and most will price match, they also supply longer length boards (less wastage) and most will deliver free locally – allow at least 10% extra for wastage and have a good look at the board quality – some of the DIY store boards are too thin and are prone to cup, the better boards will be about 32mm thick and have grooves running along the underside as well as the top. Hope this helps.
    I came, I saw, I did a little browsing.

When I did my decking (some years ago so maybe this isn't helpful) I found decking supplies were the least expensive from Keyline they do have an Edingburgh branch and would probably deliver.

    Wickes leaflets

Either download it or collect one from your local store.

Agree with everything njm posted earlier.

I bought decking screws from screwfix
    I used 32mm thick decking.

Don't forget to allow for boards needed to go round the edges of the decking.
Impperative to allow the extar 10% for wastage, better to have a few too many boards than one less!

As best as you can make the decking size to fit the board lenghts to save on wastage and unnecessary cutting.

I used 5.7m board lengths but these were a little difficult to fix down as they had warped and bent.

    Last thing.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN then do it!

what kind of decking are you looking at? if it's just a bit square(ish) decking without all the fancy bits then it's not too hard.
I just ordered timber and the decking panels, had them delivered and thought 'what the frig do i do now'. So i cracked open a beer, got the saw out and built a frame to the size i wanted it making sure i had enough supports to hold the decking panels. After i had the frame sorted i just screwed the decking panels on.

It's 12ft x 7ft and cost me £130 for materials including screws and the only imperfections are where some of the decking is slightly shorter so you can see a bit of the frame on the edges.

Ebay is the best for Decking screws, got 1000 4x10mm (Square drive) for £17.99 they might be a little more now as more people are buying them.

Also get about 4 quotes from your nearest building/timber suppliers and if some are cheaper on things than others, go with what looks the best quality and get them to price match.

Also don't forget to add a tiny slope to it 1/200 for rainfall and postion the decks boards they way the grooves will run away from the house.wall etc

Planning is the key, it will take a few weeks maybe to get all the infomation together (quotes etc) and then with the right planning you can build it in 2 days.
