you will find it hard to sell as they over value by at least 20%
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Where do you get this from?

We've had one person say they think a Foxtons valuation was low and me saying that my friends sold successfully. Foxtons wouldn't be in business if everything were overpriced by 20%.

I'm all for a first-hand slagging off, but just making stuff up doesn't help anyone!

We bought thru Foxtons last year. The property wasn't overpriced, but they sure managed to annoy me with miscommunication and constant pestering even when the delay was with the vendor. When we told the solicitor who the agent was he groaned!

I think at the end of the day it probably varies from branch to branch and person to person. We were registered with all the local agents (about a dozen of them). Very few ever rang us up with relevant properties; we had to do all the chasing. If we were ever to sell, I know who I would use; the one agent who had quite a lot on their books and did work to find us the right property, even though we didn't buy through them in the end. Of course they, like a lot of the agents, overpriced their properties, but you don't HAVE to go with their valuation.

My friend used them to market a house for rental. They overvalued the potential rent to get the business saying how wonderful the place was only to pursuade him to lower the rent to attract people less than one month later siting problems with bedroom sizes/location etc!

Anyone he dealt with seemed to be called Porsche, Tabitha or Rufus and seem to only stay around a few months. He switched agents after the first year.

Ive heard nothing good about Foxtons from anyone involved in any side of the selling or renting process. Stay away from them. Especially the Ealing branch, a lot of burglaries seem to occur in their properties.
