Dumbo and the Panasonic BM

Hope you can explain this to me. This dumbo wanted, for the first time, to make some dough for pizza. Measured everything out, placed pan into BM then realised had forgotten the butter. Of course the BM had immediately started kneading the dough.
I pressed the start/stop button to throw in the butter, but then could not restart the machine. It was stubbornly on the default xl loaf etc. It was stuck on the 4 hour mode to bake basic xl. Of course the recipe is for dough!
At present, the machine seems to be throwing the dough around and I presume I now have to wait for the cycle to finish.
I am not so worried about a dodgy loaf, just worried I may have messed up the mechanism! Reassurance please.......

No problem.
If you can't re-select, turn the machine off at the mains. Wait a moment or two, turn it back on, select dough - and hey presto

I decided to dig out my BM from back of pantry at the weekend. I have made nice loaves in it but the last one a few months ago was a disaster so it got put away in the pantry.
I bought fresh yeast and flour and put it all on, (following instructions to the letter) but when I came back home expecting a lovely bready smell to be waiting for me, all there was in the machine was flour with yeast still sat on the top. OH had a look and declared it to be operator error as I hadnt pushed the pan in far enough until it "clicked."
So determined to crack it I tried again, weighed everything meticulously, ensured pan was pushed down until it "clicked" etc, and started to do the washing up. What did I discover at the bottom of the washing up bowl? The paddle of course!
Decided it wasnt the machine not working properly but my brain and gave up for the rest of the weekend. We are now in a "desperate for bread" situation so Im going to have another go. If I get it wrong again I will have to concede that it will be cheaper in the long run to buy our bread from Sainsburys.

You are an angel to reply so quickly. I did try this but maybe in my panic, my moment was not long enough. Anyway the dough is on, waiting to be baked into an xl basic loaf!!!!!! I will have to put this down to yet another experience! :rolleyes:Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

First, larmy16, you don't need butter in a pizza dough recipe (I use a foccacia type recipe in the bread machine, flour, salt, water, olive oil, no sugar or milk powder).
Second you can usually just throw the butter or oil in without turning off the machine, just be careful if the dough has already mixed thoroughly as it might splash the butter or dough back out of the pan.
Third, if it is on the white bread cycle at the moment and you can't work out how to change/stop it, then just switch the machine off at the mains once the dough looks doughy - hopefully about 40 mins in to the cycle - and use the dough like that for your pizza according to the recipe. I think the memory lasts about 10 mins so it will be back to normal next time you want to use it.
I hope the last tip saves your pizza and the first two help with future ones.
Oh, and remember to fit the blade everyone

Thanks for the message. I switched off at the mains and glug glugged the dough out of machine onto floured board. I was so worried about the memory, but you have reassured me now saying it only lasts 10 minutes -and next time I will try your dough recipe, this one said use butter and I was not sure how much oil is equiv. to 1/2 oz butter.
thanx again
Edit to add: One last question, what is the best way to freeze the dough?
Do you put it in a ball, roll it out flat, use foil or a plastic bag? What is the best way??Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

This afernoon I have had another go with the BM and after a nights sleep my brain is working better, so I have an actual loaf! :j
Although OH has not sliced it yet it looks nice and smells nice so Im keeping my fingers crossed.
Tomorrow Im going to make my first pizza base in the machine, but the recipe says that there is enough for two bases so my next question was going to be how do I freeze it, so thanks larmy16 and tootles for solving that for me! :T0 -
To freeze some for a pizza on another day I roll it out on the baking tray and freeze it tray and all (using nonstick trays), then once frozen (after dinner generally) pull it off the tray and bag/wrap in clingfilm. Then when you next want the pizza you don't even have to defrost it (though you can if you want to be careful) because you've rolled it out so thin, just top and cook (amazing the discoveries a lazy person can make
). I have also topped and frozen the whole pizza as well but you need a bit more space in the freezer to start with so you don't muck up your topping. 0
