kettle question

Options
Hi there, hope someone can give me a bit of advice about kettles....

we use a cheapo metal kettle that sits on a gas hob. OH managed to cremate 2 in a row (he puts it on, then gets distracted, whistle doesn't work too well.....)
Then I bought a cheap replacement - you cannot pour water out of it without covering the worktop as well.

So yesterday we bought yet another (6 euros) and this morning OH duely cremated it (whistle didn't work well from the start).

I like having a kettle on the hob - I definitely know it's space-saving and think it's probably also moneysaving.
And OH is usually quite good and promised not to destroy any more...

so I guess my main questions are (for safety/environment/moneysaving):

is it worth buying a heavier, more expensive hob kettle?
is it really better to boil water on the hob?
Can you get electric kettles that don't go on standby?

Thanks for your help!

Alex x

Buy a reasonable quality electric kettle , sized to suit your needs. Only boil the amount you need. Don't be conned by the plethora of "eco" or "green" kettles on the market !

Kettles don't have 'standby', a lot have neon that show there is power to the kettle - the power used by that is just about zero.

(Actually I do have a "green" kettle, it goes with the green worksurfaces !)
