How do i contact my web server?

I think this is a silly question but i'm pretty clueless as regards this & other IT stuff. Is the web server the same as my ISP as i know who that is, virgin broadband.

Basically, i need some technical information. As virgin broadband has a 0906 number to ring up for technical enquiries, i don't have a landline & my mobile network provider has told me that it would cost £2.50 per minute to call this number & the call is expected to last about 10 minutes so there's no way i can ring them.

So i was wondering if anyone on this forum can help me out. I'm setting up a database driven website and i need to know if my server supports the following:-

I'm pretty lost at the moment so would appreciate anybody's help, especially to any other virgin broadband customers, if you know of any restrictions they impose. I'm currently using size M for broadband.

Virgin Media don't provide (as far as I know) any packages that include web hosting (or at least with AMP.)

Are you paying someone other than Virgin Media for hosting facilities? Or supply a link to the package you believe you're on which includes hosting.

The web server is the actual computer that your website is hosted on.

This should tell you what is available to use with the free webspace you get . Are you using the free webspace provided with your broadband ?
It's my problem, it's my problem

they provide a small amount of web space but its not much
  • If you have been given any web space with your ISP they are usually very basic in terms of what you can do. For instance, if you want to upload a website, you can but the directories won't be protected.

From what you say you want to do you need to order hosting with a company who will allocate you server space & provide you with a username/password & provide free support. I use streamline.net and I pay yearly, although you can pay monthly. I also register my domain names with them as well as hosting, so it makes things less complicated. When I wanted a forum on one of my sites I asked them for the mysql stuff and they sent me the login/password & it was fairly straightforward (I didn't have to pay extra or anything). They are quite cheap for bulk hosting (resellers) but I don't think they are the cheapest if you just want to host one website, so shop around!

    Hope this helps.

Saynoto0870.com has many numbers for virginmedia including: 0800 0521435 for technical support.

Not sure how current it is though. Oh and apparently their helpline goes to India and isn't rated very highly.

No i won't be using their free webspace.

Thank you so much for clarifying what a web server is, it's certainly made a difference to unconfuse me & i now have a better idea of what is i'm actually doing !

The company that's developing my website is now going to host it for me & they support all the system requirements that i mentioned. I got confused & thought i had to contact my ISP to make sure that they had all the requirements.

After getting the help that i needed from this thread, i rang this number out of curiosity, an automated voice asks you for a PIN, if you don't have one, it cuts you off.
