Sorry to ask something so basic but how do I get a banker's draft. Do I just go into my bank and they'll do it then and there or do I have to notify them??

They should do it there and then for you if you have cleared funds in your account, or can pay them cash for it instantly. Some banks do make a charge for this service.
One thing about bankers drafts though, they are no longer guaranteed payments 'as good as cash' as they used to be due to so many fraudulent ones. So that's fine if whoever you are giving it to accepts them, but won't do instead of cash if a seller or tradesman has specified cash.

It might be an idea to try and arrange it over the phone first of all. The process can be quite lebgthy and if you call during a lunchtime you may find yourself with a wait.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0

In my experience, although they will try and do one for you if you just walk in, there is no guarantee. I'd advise calling first with the details, then you only need to arrange a time to pop in and pick it up.0

Don't you have to pay £10 for a bankers draft.
I have an passbook account with one of the big 4 and that allows me to have a counter cheque at no cost.
