Home Insurance Claim Advice

Options
I am claiming on my insurance- I have both buildings and contents with the same company. I am claiming for a water leak in the bathroom - the problem is I have 2 leaks. One has come from the toilet and I have had this fixed. However water also seems to leak from around the top of the bath. Water from the toilet leak has damaged the laminate flooring and made the floorboards underneath wet. Some of the water also went through the ceiling. However should I also say about the leak from around the top of the bath (the seal between bath and wall)- I am not sure if this is covered, this has also gone through the ceiling damaging wallpaper below. Will I be covered for this, and if so would the insurer arrange for this leak to be fixed? Thanks for your help!

If water is leaking over the top of the bath it probably just means that the mastik seal is broken and it is easily replaced, it's a job we do about once a year in our bathroom. I would have thought it would be considered normal maintenance and therefore damage resulting from it not covered on an insurance policy.

However, maybe someone else will have a different view?

  • Basically the subsequent damage, i.e repairs to the flooring and wallpaper, should be covered in both instances. But the cost of repairing the leaks will not be covered under the standard household policy.

But you'll need to check your policy wording to see whether you have a policy excess per claim. Assuming that there is an excess, you'll need to decide whether it's worthwhile making the claim.

    Good luck.
