Windows XP Home. Have I been duped?

Options
Help please.

I recently purchased the above operating system on eBay.

It came shrink wrapped with the promised COA and after some initial difficulty in loading it seemed to be okay.

I activated it, as instructed by Microsoft about a week later and have been using it for just over three weeks.

Now it seems I am unable to access MSN updates for it and the MSN update site is telling me the authorisation code (product key) was not issued by Microsoft.

The seller seems genuine and the service was good.

I have contacted the seller who seems concerned and wants to help but has asked for the product key.

Do you think this is safe to pass this on and has anyone had similar experiences please?

Kind regards,

Faston.

Don't have experience but sounds genuine to me.
I'd release the key and hope for a new one.

The most important thing is that you have an operating system that works.
This will not/should not hinder you operating non microsoft software and updating them where required.
Make a note of your key though just in case you crash it if you are one of the technical types.

:oIf I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.

If you are having probs with Microsoft updates

    In IE
    Goto Tools > Manage Add-ons..

Select "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" from the dropdown menu
Now find the "Windows Genuine Advantage" Add-on and disable it

Should fix the problem for you

If you think you have been duped then I believe Microsoft run a service where they will issue a free replacement XP (even for a pirate copy) if you provide full details of where you bought the unauthorised copy. Worth finding out about this if only to provide a stick to beat the the seller by (if they are legit they have nothing to worry about).

you could use a product called bigfix, freeware... it searches microsoft for updates and then controls the download and installation of them
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

    Thanks Rob,
    I'll give it a try.
Meantime, the seller of the original item referred to in the first post has offered to send a disk containing upgrades.
Does this sound legit' to you guys?
    Thanks again to all.

I think you'll find the replacement from Microsoft can be chargeable

actually that sounds a little strange to me; what was wrong with sending that in the first place?

Can I ask *how* you activated it? (web, phone etc?)

Also, can you do start > run and type winver in the box.... hit ok.

In the window it will say Version 5.1 followed by a load of stuff in brackets... type all the stuff in the brackets out and post it here.

Ring Microsoft and acitvate it by phone! Or you can use the web to do it.
