Student railcard, NUS/matriculation card perks, some tickets for cinema, plays etc, Virgin and HMV 10% off, some hair salons. Also, many clubs, discos etc do a discount for nurses! Also bookshops. Endsleigh do student insurance.
Btw - not sure if Natwest is your best choice. Some friends of mine have had very bad student experiences with them (charges etc). There is a thread somewhere in the 'pure money' section of the chat site about this, not sure where, sorry, but within last week.
Hope this helps for starters, L.0 -
hiya
thanks
will i get my nus at uni?
i got natwest as this site said it was the best!!AGHHH!!! i am already with natwest though and havent got any probs so far
what happened to your friends??0 -
hi another fellow student nurse! unlike you i am a secconded student so i get my full HCA wages paid by my trust every month. I am very lucky but i have still looked into what financial aid i can get!
basically for you it comes down to:
Bursuary
Council Tax Discount 25%
Student bank account (0% overdraft)
NUS card (which will be given to you in your first induction week)
Hardship funds (if needed and often involves a tearfull begging episode to your financial officer at uni)
and thats basically it. you cant get a student loan as you already have a bursary. but this is a good thing as you dont have to pay your bursary back!
the nus discount gets you 10% off but only in certain shops such as ravel, topshop etc. always best to ask though!
get used to budgeting and putting away money every month for christmas and birthdays. visit the moneysaving old style for tips and monthly games such as the pin money challenge. look into it - its a good laugh!
Join the nurse bank at your local NHS hospital. - ours pays weekly and gives decent rates especially for nights. (£12hr)
Natwest are ok as a student account and have been voted martins best this year as they give you the free railcard which can save you a few quid!
as you live at home and not in res accom - i would advise you to start tightening your strings now and making sure you have the cheapes providers for gas and electricity etc. READ MARTIN'S ARTICLES on gas/leccy, telephone, isp ect ect as the less you spend on these things the more money you have to live on as a student!
being a student is fun, you meet loads of new people and some will be in a simmilar situation so ask about money saving - they may tell you some great tips like local council grants etc.
buy a flask is a great tip as in my first two weeks i spent nearly £50 in the canteen on coffee and sandwiches. you can take your own and sit with your new friends - trust me once they hit week three they will be doing the same!
the very best of luck to you and if you have any questions about the course - PM me and i will give you as much info as i can.

Hi,
If you work for the nhs. Look at this website too! https://www.nhsdiscounts.com
You will need to reigister (with info from your wage slip) as obviously it's only for nhs staff.0 -
My daughter is a student nurse and is really struggling despite finding about 10 hours a week work in a local bar.
What I find really unfair is that she does not have the option to live at home so has to pay about £260 a month to the uni for her self catering room in her flat, but gets exactly the same money as the student nurses who are living at home with their parentsNice to save.0 -
yes i agree with you.. my friend will get £666 a yr more than me for being over 26yrs old yet she lives with her parents and i have a house they should look at circumstances but then again i spose we should be very grateful for the bursary!0
