The big cities are fairly modern in terms of dressing, its more the rural areas where people/women dress in traditional stuff. Its best to get your bearings first few days and if its a good location/modern area then there should be no problem.0

I was there for business in December. One rule of thumb that I was advised was to ensure that my shoulders were covered at all times. I think it depends on 'the big city' that you're visiting, as I visited two of India's major cities in the East and West, and it was very different in both in terms of how I was received as a Westerner.
I'm not sure on the shorts front; can't say that I spotted anyone wearing shorts whilst there, but it was their 'winter' and they were all wrapped up in the 25 degree heat, apart from me!0 -
keep your shoulders covered when out in public. Shorts were also not worn in public. The women in the city wore 3/4 length cotton trousers. You will actually be able to buy appropriate clothing very, very cheaply once you arrive there so really you shouldn't take very much with you as you will be taking plenty back!!:rotfl:0

I reckon it’s more about common sense and logic here. In the big cities it’s not a major issue, I would suggest covering up otherwise you’ll get burnt!! In the small towns and villages it’s a bit more conservative. But the locals can spot a tourist a mile away so they are more or less expecting it. So long as you don’t mind the occasional staring (that’s regardless of how covered up you are!). As it’s hot make sure you’ve got plenty of sun tan lotion and lots of thin cotton clothes. Other than that you’ll have a great time.. All you have to do is have an open mind. I’ve noticed in India that everyone always tries to be as modern as they can so everything is always a little extra than you expect

Thank you very much for your replies. I will pack lightly. I am going just take basics and go with the flow when out there, as it looks like we will be out there longer. As you say I will be able to stock up on things quite cheaply when out there.0

Bring back a masala dabba as a souvenir. I reckon these are going to be the next culinary "must have" item. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.

My Mam felt uncomfortable walking round in tops and dresses with thin straps. She found a pashmina useful to drape over her shoulders for walking round in public. Here I go again on my own....0
