Linux running in Windows XP

Currently I have a dual boot PC with Windows XP and Suse Linux. I use XP mostly and Linux occassionally for software development. I love linux though, having cut my computing teeth using unix mainframes and workstations.
But I find it tedious to reboot to switch between XP and Linux.
Recently I have become aware of screenshots on the web showing linux running in its own window under Windows XP.
Has anyone any experience of this. Is it any good and do I need a "fast" computer.
Thanks,
David

Hi David,
I've never tried Virtual PC, but you can use cygwin to emulate linux under windows. It provides a linux style shell, so you can run programs like ssh from a bash command line.

I often use cygwin to ssh into my linux server, you can then run graphical X programs over the ssh session.
However, cygwin will not allow you to see the ext3 (or whatever filesystem you're using) partition, its a totally new installion of a linux emulator.
I don't know of anything that will let you see your Suse partition though.
Hope that helps,

If you have access to a unix network you could install an X server such as Exceed on Windows and point it at a Unix box.
Perhaps an old/cheap computer acting as the unix server and install the X Windows program on XP and link them up.Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication - Leonardo Da Vinci0 -
Thanks for these helpful suggestions. I'll take a look. I am thinking of doing something special with a new computer. So reformatting ext3 etc is not a problem.0
