Tesco home phone v BT

Can anyone advise me what the pros and cons of changing to Tesco home phone plan 3 are?
I've worked out that for around £6 extra a year I can ring friends 24/7 instead of having to wait until the evening or weekends (free calls with internet provider).
Do they make it difficult to change internet provider, for example?
Do you have to have Tesco broadband  ?
What happens if there is a problem with the line? Do they deal with repairs/problems etc. quickly?
Has anyone encountered problems with the clarity of their Tesco line?
Thanks in advance

For a start Tesco Talk 3 (24/7 Geographical Calls) is £7 a month ,and its only £5.95 a month with BT Option 3 if you sign a 12 month contract , and the first 3 months are free.making the true cost about £4.47p a month.
Then Tesco charge for caller display where as its virtually free or free with BT.
Plus if you move your line rental to Tesco you want be able to cps your calls to another supplier,or use the likes of www.18185.co.uk
How many peak calls do you make a month? If you dont make lots use 18185 for your peak calls only 5p per call, and your ISP for free? evening and weekend calls.0 -
Thanks jhp, I was aware of the offer from BT for Option 3, which sounds great on the face of it, but once the 12 months is up you have to stay on Option 3, you can't downgrade back to Options 1 or 2.
I actively avoid making calls through the day if I can possibly can, but would like to have the option of doing so. I'll look into 18185, I've never heard of cps-ing calls
Maybe I should stay on option 1 and use 18185. It's a bit complicated as it is as if I want to make an unavoidable call, say on a Monday morning, I have to put a four figure number in before I dial the rest of the number so that the call goes on the BT bill!:wave:0 -
If you take the special offer you must stay on BT Together Option 3 for 12 months from the date of taking up the special offer and may not downgrade to Options 1 or 2.But you can return to one of them after the 12 months is up.
CPS =Carrier Pre Select . Means your calls are with one supplier eg your ISP and your line rental is with BT.
Using 18185 also offers you cheaper mobile and certain ngn calls.0 -
from april 1st bt line rental will be £11.75 . If you call 0800800880 and ask to go on bt together option 3 with the £2 line rental discount by april 1st you will pay £3.95 for the unlimited calls each month for 12 months and opt for online bills meaning line rental £10.50 plus £3.95 for anytime calls. 25% off mobiles plus the friends and family discount. call now as after april 1st the £2 discount may not be continued.0

Can you give us a link to the £2 line rental discount offer you refer to ?
The only discount they seem to have is for paperless billing currently 50p going up to £1.25 a month, from 1 April 2008, which will offset the 75p increase in line rental, not reduce the cost of any calling plans eg. Option 3.

I think there's confusion there with paying by DD reducing the cost by £1.50/month and the (old) 50p reduction for paper-free billing.
Can you give us a link to the £2 line rental discount offer you refer to ?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
