Homes Under the Hammer, 03/03/08

Get back to work you ... if you can spot/remember all the different tunes, you're paying FAR too much attention to daytime TV!I love homes under the hammer. I love the jaunty presenters. I love the f eckless divs that feature. But best of all I love the way the incidental music is always subtley representative of whatever the narrative is thats taking place. Faves include:
'This Old house'
'Green Door'
'Our House'
'Money Money Money'
etc etc
Genius.
There is "having it on in the background, turned down low" and there is "sitting watching it, making notes".
:P0 -
lol. I wonder is the dunce will turn up here?
I thought homes under the hammer only featured positive results, cos that's the only way the auction lets them attend? i.e yeah, the dunce buyer didn't even look at it, or know it had no central heating, or door frames, or was riddled with dry rot, but still comes out of it with a hefty profit 3 months later (less never mentioned fees and lost opportunity income)?
They do show the bad ones as well, like the time the guy hadn't sorted his finances out before the auction, so he failed to complete.
If agents are going to use the as seen on TV claim, then why not state which programme? I've sold a few that have featured on TV, but I don't think Crimewatch & the lead story on the 10 0'clock news counts.0 -

The vendor thinks the publicity of being on TV last year has made it worth more. The agent says it just highlights the fact that it has been on a year and not sold. The seller turned down our offer and we walked away. Sadly for them it actually 'won' on the programme (Escape to the Country apparently) but the people on the programme didn't buy it in the end.
She 'accepted' the offer a month after she originally turned it down, by which time we had seen others better for the money.
I only want the bit on the right, drive, garage and a bit of garden.
Would they take £75k cash for just the bit on the right, garage, driveway and garden do you think?0 -
Doubt it.
According to the agent the seller was the most horrible person with whom they had ever dealt.
She rang the agent weeks after turning down our offer (and very rudely, too) and asked 'why we hadn't come back with a higher offer and what was the agent doing about it'.
The agent, who incidentally was excellent, enjoyed telling her.
Actually the garden was pretty poor. I loved the house, but the size of the land was considerably over-estimated and it was badly waterlogged. Just an acre or so of wasteland, really. Nice walk through the woods to the beach, though.0 -

   SPRUNG!!!!
I wasn't watching it, honest Mum!!! In fact I've got a hard drive choc full of various Grand Designs/Life in Cold Blood/Shameless that I can't imagine I'll ever get round to watching at this rate...
I've been on my best behaviour, I thought you'd think me conspicuous by my absence... AND I've just left Mr Phirefly and chums at the pub to come home to get on with my work. I only went down there in the first place to get them off my back because they think I'm overdoing it.... I invoiced for 67 hours last week....
O but I DO love HUTH...0 -
Just an anecdote concerning auctions, flipping and estate agents from a friend who was sitting behind the purchaser at the auction.
This property was sold at auction for £42,000 in July last year and the purchasers intention was to get planning permission to turn it into a holiday home:
http://archive.theargus.co.uk/2007/7/12/238062.html
I guess that after the auction the purchasers actually read and understood the planning restrictions. It has been on the market since then at £85,000 and the original ads included the disclosure of an interest under The Estate Agents Act.

What is more frightening is that the buyer of this property said that he had another venture - he would be building a development. Considering what he thought was updating - a vile stretch of concrete and gravel at the front with a fence I would not like to think what his new build will be like.0

Imagine that, a property you actually thought of buying appearing on TV and then still on sale after several months!
This from the rightmove website really cracked me up:
"....with views across towards Tenby and, we are informed, the entire grounds amount to approximately 2 acres or thereabouts....."
I thought EAs were supposed to be sure about stuff like that before selling?
As you said 'wasteland'

Sounds like work's going well for you. 67 hours = good! I'm pleased.
I seem to only manage about 15 hours/week at the moment. The rest I call "research", which means watching daytime TV and surfing the internet, hanging out in forums. Ooops!0
