Thanks for all of your money saving advice - it's invaluble! I am really up for the challenge now. I feel like a new person already and I haven't done anything yet! It's quite exciting in a funny sort of way. x0

Congrats on the pregnancy - I found out a while ago that I'm in the same situation - in debt and pregnant! Since I found out and stopped drinking, I've saved a fortune though! Still a worry for me, as my partner is a student, but a short maternity leave (possible due to supportive mum and at home regularly partner) should leave us ok - and still enable me to pay off my debts every month.Lightbulb moment Oct 2007

Congrats to you too!!! I must admit I was a drinker before pregnancy and a social smoker but since finiding out I haven't touched any and have noticed the difference in my pocket. I used to get through about 2-3 bottles of wine at a weekend and sometimes 1-2 bottles in the week!! at about £5 a pop it adds up!
Good luck with the maternity leave, Shame your only having a short one, its a very special time and you need to make the most of it! Is there no way you can make it longer? are you working full time or part time?
I had my Mum there to look after the little one on my fist pregnancy for a few months which saved a lot of money - usually you find that the childcare is the biggest dent in your pcoket so if you can save that your miles better off already! unfortunaltely I wont have that luxury this time round so I am going to have to think hard about returning to work. A job working from home would be perfect! x0 -
http://www.freecycle.org/
its a website that you can offer or request stuff from people in your area, the only thing is it must be free (hence the name).
you need to offer some stuff before you can post a "wanted". its up to the collector to pick the items up, you get all sorts requested and offered on there, it saves it going in landfill.0 -
You are a little harsh and it reminds me of my Dad but I always used to listen to him!!! again another kick up the butt!!! Thanks again really useful!
I think that you should consider the got-to-goes merely as a temporary measure - at least until you have taken a huge bit out of the overdraft! I don't know if anyone has already said this, but I would stop the saving you are doing each month, and put it against the overdraft instead, as the interest charged on it is much greater than any interest you are likely to earn from savings!
Congrats on the pregnancy btw!0 -

Hi and thanks for the advice. I will definately be using my savings to pay some of the overdraft off. I was initially saving for baby stuff and so get me through maternity leave but I am sure I will "get through it" as they say. I do have a husband who works and funnily enough has just been promoted so has got us a little pay rise! Although he will be using that difference to pay off his overdraft!
Also I have been thinking more about the overdraft and have been looking around this site and was wondering wether it would be worth applying for a credit card to transfer the overdraft onto as even if I can't get 0% I still may be able to get a lesser % than what the back in charging (currently 15.9%) then I could set up a DD to pay a set amount - say £300 per month to pay it off!
What do you think? Good or bad idea?0 -
hmmm, my initial though twas providing you get the bank to cancel then ok, but......
There are many many threads on here recently re cc's putting interest rates up at the drop of a hat. you'd need to make sure it was a life of balance interest rate and that t wasn't going to change. if not, don't do it. does that make sense?
