HELP PLEASE! Computer running Slow

I really hope someone can help me as I am at my wits end. For the past week or so my computer loads pages very slow and often I get the "Page unavailable" screen I am on 2mb broadband and am used to "click" and it is there, so this is driving me nuts. I have run a speed test and sent the results to E7even, they say they are fine and I probably have a virus or spyware. I have run Microsoft Anti-spy, Ad-Aware Personal and SpyBot, each time I do it I find one or two things, remove them but it does not solve the problem. I have also used system restore to take my computer back to way before I had a problem, this did seem to help for a while but now I am back to square one. I occasionally hear a sort of quiet chiming, sounds a little like a clock striking 5 o'clock, I have not got a clue as to where it is coming from, any ideas?
One more thing, if I have left the computer for a while and the screen has gone blank, when I start using it again the opening page sometimes says "2 programs running" when I only have one! I have tried to find out which other program is running but have dailed miserably.
PLEASE PLEASE someone HELP!!!
Kathryn

You haven't mentioned if you have run a virus scanner, just spyware/malware removers. If not head over to http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG
and download Avast Anti Virus which is free for home users. You do need to register some details first.
Install it, then do what deary65 says and turn off system restore (temporarily).
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, (Restart and as soon as the first writing appears on the screen start tapping F8) This should bring up a new menu with one of the options being to start in "Safe Mode". Select this and when the computer starts, run a complete virus scan scan, the run some of the anti-spyware scanners. Hopefullly this should get rid of any nasties.
Restart computer (not into safe mode) and turn system restore back on.
Hope this helps. Why do companies offer you "free gifts?"
Since when has a gift NOT been free?0 -

Try running at any two online anti virus scanners,
Bit Defender or Trend or Panda
Do you have anti trojan software these two are free and update almost daily, Ewido or a2
Finally have you visited either PC Pitstop or DSL Report Tweak Test0 -
Have you tried going to tools internet options Delete cookies delete files clear history!
Lots of files stored on your hard drive can slow down your pc.
Some people have thousands of cookies all adding space and slowing your pc down.
Once it took me 20 mins to delete all mine, and my pc speeded up a lot faster.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Go have a look in Task Manager and see if you've got a process that's hogging all the CPU time (%) or memory.
