Woodworm

Not sure I am in the right forum but here goes

Just found out we have some woodworm in the dining room floor and wondered if we could treat it with something other than the woodworm liquid purchased from B&Q - cheaper alternatives I was looking for really.

many thanks

Buy yourself a large garden sprayer - the ones with a hose and "wand" and you pump up the pressure. Go to local builders merchants and buy a 5ltr tin of Cuprinol 5* wood treatment (this one treats dry rot as well, so coveres all angles). Lift every other floor board. Spray undersides of adjoining boards and the boards you have lifted up. Fit boards back down.

    Sprayer - £5 Wilkinsons
    Treatment £10 - £15
    Time half a day.

    Done it tons of times.

Warning. IT STINKS. warn neighbours, open windows, keep pets away. if you suffer from hayfever may well make you sneeze. Wear face mask and goggles.
Chuck sprayer away afterwards as residue crytalises and will kill plants if used later.

  • many thanks will give it a go :)
  • Do not use Cuprinol 5* as this contains a fungicide as well as an insecticide. There is no benefit to be gained spray applying a fungicide 'just in case'. As you only have woodworm you only need an insecticide wood preservative. Also the Cuprinol product is what is called a solvent (white spirit) based product hence it will smell to high heavens and it is flammable! To correctly treat an average size room will require 8-10 litres. Contact a company called Safeguard Europe and ask about a product called Soluguard which is a water based insecticide woodworm treatment sold in water soluable concerntrate sachets - one of these makes five litres. No smell - no fire risk.

First ever post after much lurking............

I believe Borax (from pharmacist - old type not supermarket variety) will treat woodworm and is cheapest solution

    Hope this helps

  • Borax in timber preservation terms is disodium octaborate tetrahydrate. It comes as a white powder and is soluble in water. In this raw state its ability to penetrate wood is very limited leaving large surface deposits to be rubbed/blown off. However when disolved in a glycol and applied to damp wood it races in! It is available in this format in three working strengths. It is a very good fungicide indeed but for insect attack (woodworm) it does not have contact killing properties - it has to be injested to work thus I feel better products are available for woodworm. WoW! that was heavy!
