Acer Laptop

I am out in Tenerife at the moment and looking to buy a Laptop, itseems that all the best deals are on Acer laptops. Are these a good brand and what spec would be best for general use eg internet, email, word and excel.
Is it better to go for the duaul core or celeron chip?

Acer are a decent brand these days - now one of the biggest I believe. Dual core is better than Celeron (by a long way) and Core-2 duo is better than both. If it comes pre-installed with Vista, make sure it's got 2Mb of memory, or at least the capability to install this much (memory is currently the cheapest it's ever been). Also, make sure it's got an English version installed, unless you speak excellent Spanish ;-)

If you get us the model number and spec we could check around and see what the price is here for you.

I have an acer and my brother-in-law has 2. No real problems to report [mine is a PC World refurb and has been fine].
Build quality is adequate/average and they seem to be good value for the price not withstanding offers [Dell]
There are minor niggles ... sockets [mains plug, usb etc] seem to 'loosen' slightly through use [ie. snug fit feeling has disappeared], crystalbright screen will scratch very very easily [also marks up with finger dabs which are harder to remove with screen wipes than they should be]
comes pre loaded with a whole load of Acer programs which are annoying after a while [uninstalled/switched them off]
1 of b-i-l laptops will only connect to wireless router if it is in the same room [other 1 is fine - as is mine] maybe has different network adapter?
I had problems activating Vista [had to go through Microsoft helpline ... maybe because it was a refurb].
On the whole they seem to be fine for everyday computer stuff but on balance I would probably go for something like a Toshiba next time - just for a different experience ... if you drive a ford focus, would you then buy another or maybe fancy a change [VW golf/new style astra/renult/peugeot etc]

    hope it helps.

Iv got an acer and had no problems up until just before 2 years after i got it. The hinges of the laptop broke and the screen broke away. I think this has been a manufacturing fault as the hinges were staying still rather than moving and caused the screen to break. As i am out of my year guarantee they won't fix it and i need to buy a new laptop. (Im currently using the desktop computer we have at home). The laptop does work still as its just the casing of the laptop thats broken away.
Other than that i have not had any problems with the acer laptop
  • Had mine for just over a year and no problems apart from the inbuilt webcam which seems to connect and disconnect when it wants to!

I bought my grand-daughter an acer and she loves it. Connected to my wifi straight away anywhere in the house. This looks like a good deal at the cheap end of the market £250) http://www.isatechnology.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=37&products_id=178

If you want an extended guarantee (In case the lid breaks !!!) then it is extended by two years if you buy this case (I got one for my gd and there are no catches)

Acers come with loaded software so make sure that you copy those onto a disc and put them in a safe place - well labelled - before doing anything else.
