I want to upgrade my computer to XP with a secondhand original disc obtained from my brother.
He damaged his computer lost his XP disc so bought a new one and then found his old one a few months later.
If I use the old disc will it work when it comes downloading upgrades, service packs etc from microsoft site or will it state this disc is registered to another user?

If it's a retail version of XP (not an OEM one that was pre-installed on your brothers computer) then you will just need to ring up and re-activate it within 30 days of installing it. If it's an OEM version then it can only legitimately be used on the computer it was purchased with and you won't be able to access the downloads.
Provided that you can re-activate it you will have access to all the latest downloads and updates without a problem.0
