Global Warming is just a con to try and convince us to stop using oil, moonrakerz wrote: »Politicians aren't that clever !
No, but the people who run the oil companies are, and the politicians listen to them.0 -

Why would the oil companies try and get the politicians to get us to stop using oil ?

Claiming something is the hottest, coldest, wettest since records began is like starting to keep a diary when you are 48 years old and a month later claim there have only ever been 4 Saturdays because that's all your records show.
You may find this hard to understand, but we had hot and cold weather long before we could write, measure temperature or thought to make a note of it each day.
The whole global warming theory is based on just the data that has been written down, and then only the temperatures. Look at the bigger picture and you will see the temperature has been going up and down regularly for millions of years. It just happens that we are in an up period and can't remember colder times.
Apart from that, I don't care who says the hottest year was in the last ten years. Whoever said that didn't live through the summer of 76.
I agree with you, it has been hotter in the past, geologically, I dont live on a geologic time scale and neither does my son, the difference is the speed of the warming, we may not be able to adapt, the earth and life in general will adapt given time but our way of life may not. And actually the records from ice cores go back a long way, at least 740,000 years, so thats a pretty good diary for the recent past, it is now on average warmer that at any time in the last 1000 years, no great shakes for the planet as a whole which has seen worse, but bad for our reliance on a constant climate for planned agriculture.
You're also missing the point about 1976, it was hot HERE in 1976, which means nothing when compared to the global average, I remember that summer quite well,0 -

They don't want to stop us using it, just not use so much so it last longer and we don't need to look for alternatives.
The more we think the oil is going to run out the harder we will look for alternatives. If we reduce our consumption of oil it will last longer and we won't be in such a hurry to find something else.0 -

I'm afraid big business doesn't work like that.
If it can sell a million tons this year, it will; rather than sell a quarter of a million tons each year for the next four years.
Anyway "WE" aren't going to look for an oil replacement - the oil companies will when they actually see the oil running out, and not before. Money spent on that search now is just wasted profits !0 -

Are you serious? Man has adapted very well in the past, gone through ice ages and heat without too much trouble. And actually the records from ice cores go back a long way, at least 740,000 years, so thats a pretty good diary for the recent past, it is now on average warmer that at any time in the last 1000 years,
Is that the best you can do, we have records going back 740,000 years and it is hotter now than at any time in the past 1000 years! That means it must have been hotter in the preceding 739,000 years. Otherwise you would have said it is hotter now than it has been in the last 740,000 years.
Apart from that, it was hotter in the 12 century and that isn't more than a thousand years ago.no great shakes for the planet as a whole which has seen worse, but bad for our reliance on a constant climate for planned agriculture.
We have never had a constant climate, and have never relied on one. We just go with the flow. You're also missing the point about 1976, it was hot HERE in 1976, which means nothing when compared to the global average, I remember that summer quite well,
So why do the global warming brigade point to last May being the hottest since 1936 and say it is proof of global warming?
They also fail to mention that if the earth was getting warmer the British isles should get colder. We should be getting colder as the rest of the earth warms up, but we aren't!0 -

In the 12th century there werent 6 billion people relying on mass agriculture
"modern" mass agriculture relies on a very average climate, ask a grain farmer, of the African people who arent geting donated grain from the USA this year because there was no surplus
A very small number of humans lived through Ice ages, not 6 billion, where do you foresee that the population would migrate to if the icebergs return, or if sea levels rise ? - during the last ice age we were a small band of hunter gatherers
People keep pointing to waarm years because we have have had a succesion of very hot years recently, which suggests a trend
The British Isles will cool rapidly only if the gulf stream stops, that hasnt happened yet, but heres hoping it doesnt.0 -

The link shows the average surface temperature from NOAA for the last 25 years, who publish the figures every month , you can see the cooler month of January on the lower right. You will also notice it makes very little difference to the overall uptrend. To say this heralds the end of global warming is as silly as saying a cool spell in April heralds the end of Summer. In fact it was still the 31st warmest January on record

The world is already going though a short term cold spell (by the standards of recent decades) due to the El Nina ocean current which oscillates with its warmer cousin El Nino.0 -
And err, con to stop using oil....thats a good one, you are actually concious that oil is a finite resource arent you ?? - eventually it WILL run out, many predict that "peak oil" has already occured
So, I'll return to my question, so what ??? - even if it is a con, from a moneysaving point of view, how is moving to more sustainable lifestyles a bad thing, how is having to turn off the TV at night not a good thing, it doesnt matter if it's saving the planet or not, at the very least it;s saving you money!!!
I am afraid your arguments are typical of the 'converted''!
I assume the quote above is in response to my post #17?
If you read it carefully I never stated that oil(or any finite resource) running out is a 'con'; as it obviously makes sense to husband those resources.
My theory is that the man made 'Global Warming' argument is being used to 'frighten' some sections of society into making those savings in energy, and to a certain extent justify increased taxation of energy.
The 'take this nasty medicine as it's good for you' approach! I personally have no objection to the objective, rather the disingenuous approach.
However there is a more important point.
For the sake of argument let us concede that the earth is getting warmer.
What you and the 'Al Gore' brigade do not know, is to what extent(if any) that Man contributes to this warming.
Yet like all zealous converts to a 'religion' the Green movement will not countenace any counter-argument - 'there is but one God!'0 -
One of the reasons the usa are not donating as much wheat to 3rd world countries is because of the loony green brigade telling us to use less oil, drive fewer miles.........and tax people more by using the excuse....*we need to fund (and subsidise with your tax dollars)the loony idea of making bio-fuels by using up all the grain produced which would normally feed the world.................or something along those lines,,,,,,Political?....I dont do Political....well,not much!0
