Replacing one window cheaply

Hi all
I have one window which is not double glazed / PVC on the upstairs landing. I have no idea why the rest of the house has been fitted with new windows and not this one as it was like that when I bought the house 18 months ago.
Now, I've been trying to find out how to go about replacing it without success... I tried a few local window companies who basically hinted very strongly that if I wasn't getting the whole lot replaced, they weren't interested. One of the national companies sent a rep who told me they wouldn;t do it for less than £1k. Another local guy didn;t bother to show up when we arranged for him to come and take a look - maybe the same reason why the bigger companies aren;t interested, I thought? Price wise, there seems to be a minimum order value of at least £500 for all the places I have checked out. So, how on earth do I get this replaced cheaply?! All I need is a basic double glazed window (must open due to building regs). Anyone got any ideas? Is it possible to get this done for just a couple of hundred or less? I'm in West Yorkshire if anyone local can give me any recommendations?
Hope someone can help or make a suggestion? Cheers

wickes have some sizes in stock from about 100 quid. others to order.
a handyman could fit it for approx 100/200.Get some gorm.0 -
If they are a standerd size then yes wickes is fine. Otherwise I always use little local companies for these, and never had a problem. I go thru the yellow pages and find one without a fancy ad, and conseravtory showroom, give them a bell, pop round to check the quality and away you go.
Up here I fit 1 every couple of months or so, and use just one company now (who also employ 1 fitter at £160 per day). Average cost varies but from about £150 upwards I pay. They just put my order in with other orders and the window arrives in a little over a week.
If you go to the bigger conservatory type companies yes you wiull pay a premium.
One point. Dont forget most of these little guys just buy the windows in, or have very basic workshops and buy the glass units in so they can keep their costs down.

Do you have a Roundbrand near you?
We bought our windows from them (double glazing manufacturer) and had them fitted by their recommended freelance fitter....did our whole house for just over £2k which was fantastic considering Safestyle quoted us £1k for two windows!! That included a bay too.
If you don't have Roundbrand I'd look in the yellow pages and see if there are any manufacturers near you, then give them a call and ask if they supply to the public.0 -
wahey i used to work for Roundbrand in Doncaster. Cheap as chips. I'll leave it there.0

Thanks for all the ideas... I had a look at the Wickes ones, but... you guessed it - not the same size as my window, aargh.
There's a Roundbrand about 30 miles away from, so I'll give them a ring for sure. Never heard of them before but going on the prices I think they're definitely worth a look! Cheers, guys
