17yr old insurance

Is it against the rules for me to buy my sons car?

Is it against the rules for him to be the main driver and me
to be a named driver?

Is it against the rules for me to pay for the insurance though my
current insurer both cars at fully comp?

    thanks Labman for your reply

Phoned insurers(DL) today to sus things out on hyperthetical basis
but was told in no uncertains terms that now they had a recording of
me saying I was proposing that my son would be driving they would make sure I didn't try to front with any company. So much for honestly asking what was what regarding insurance. So I politely told them threat all you
like as I have no intention of fronting my real concern was having
to pay £2000ish up front and my query was if anything if it were possible
for me pay all the insurance in installments.
So son is now planing to take on a second job during easter and exam
leave (hope school don't caught him) to top up his existing salary cos his
current boss would like him to do extra work for the 4 months before Uni
and that is only possible with a car because of times, distance, and no
    public transport (rural dwellers)
He wants to pay everything himself and has savings but monthly payments
paid to me would have got things rolling quicker and easier.
  • I pay monthly for my sons insurance and he pays me back from his wages, he is also a student. Last year we insured with Direct Line but we have changed this year to Endsleigh, in both cases the first payment is a 2 month deposit followed by 10 x monthly instalments
check Endsleigh out their rates were more competitive at renewal, my son had held a full license for 11 months at renewal, Direct line allowed nothing for this but Endleigh did

I have a 17 year old son who wants to drive. Due to having both cars stolen as a result of a burglary our premiums have increased and our insurance company wants an extra 3000 pounds to put him on one car for the remaining 7 months of the policy. He will not be the main driver as we use our cars for work and will have occasional use at weekends.

Trying other ways for this has given him a quote of 2,500 with me as the named driver, but this will increase once he has passed his test and can drive unaccompanied.

I found a website called youngmarmalade that offers the opportunity to buy a new or nearly new car with the young person being the insured with the policy for 17yo male at 973 for the year, and female under 600.

I telephoned and it seems like a good idea, although we have yet to decide what to do. The man I spoke to said they were looking at a new idea of being able to insure the young person as a separate policy to drive a parents car while they were still learning. This is now on the website at 15 pounds a week. This is not 'fronting' as it has no effect on the parents insurance which will continue to run, and any claim while the young person is driving will be paid from the supplementary policy.

I plan to do this until we sort out a more permanent arrangement, it seems like the answer to a problem that faces many of us. How can they get experience if they can't afford to drive?

    good find catnap.

Having just bought a car for a 17 year old, I compared prices. The insurance is ultra cheap but the price of the car was more. In fact the final difference put marmalade ahead by about £200, but then my insurance is high due to my postcode, so for others it would be even less of a bargain.

I like the look of insurance for £15 a week on their parents car, though the downside is that the minute they pass their test, they need proper insurance sorted.

I have just "sold" my car to my daughter who is 19yrs and been driving for 7 months. I was told by various insurers the she would have to be the Policy holder and main driver of the car - got conflicting advice on who had to be the owner - still have to decide to transfer ownership of private no. plate or leave it on as this costs to change. I eventually opted for her to have her own insurance with me the named driver, no vol excess as she wouldn't have the money to pay out £250 or there abouts if she had an accident and had to make a cliam, Comp excess was lowest avail at £250 with a company called elephant. Thought this was reasonable at £650. Only downside is that there option to pay by installments is very high - about 27.9%.
