Free upgrade to BT option 2 for new customers

We only needed to get a BT line as we want to switch our broadband provider due to ongoing problems with Virgin Media over the last 6 months.
I called on Wednesday evening just to see if I'd have to pay the £124.99 connection fee and was delighted to hear that I wouldn't and proceeded to get a new phone line.
There's a current promotion for new customers that means you get BT Option 2 for the price of Option 1, so free evening and weekend calls are included
Not that it makes much difference to us as we have enough free minutes on our mobiles and weren't planning on using the landline for anything except incoming calls (it'll be cheaper for my mother to call me as she has a landline/PAYG on a different network so calls to my mobile are expensive) but may be useful to others.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Melvis,
Did you have to pay anything at all for installation? My daughter wants to move from Virgin and has been told she will need to pay to reconnect an old BT line which has been dormant for years.
Thanks0 -
Plug a phone into the BT line.
Does it have a dial tone?
If so dial 17070 and see if you here a message and the phone number of that line.
If so it should be a free activation, if not it will cost £125.0 -
Beware of 'free' stuff from BT. There is usually a sting in the small print.0

I have to agree but the jury is still out on this one apart from the rolling yearly contract.0 -

Not a penny and the line hasn't been in use for years.Small business owner 🧵 Ex MSE comper 🏆 Student loan repayer 💴 Romanian dog rescuer 🐕 Hopefully a cost of living survivor 🤞🏻0 -
I have a sencond line here that we do not pay for and it worked last time I tried it, so if I wanted it installed again it would be free as I can dial out and in to it.
If it has been disconnected from the system and it no longer has a dial tone it would cost me £125 to have it working again.
EDITED:
Line still works, must have not used it for 4 years now although the number has changed.0
