How safe is it to pay for holiday by debit card?

I have booked & paid for flights and paid a deposit on hotel through seperate company, Freedom Direct. I want to pay the balance but I don't have a credit card. I've heard all sorts of stories in the past about holiday companies going bust and travellers losing out on money and just wonder is it safe to pay by debit card?

Personally I wouldn't use my debit card unless the company I was buying from were well established, I was one of those unlucky people who booked flights with the infamous Maxjet, because I booked on my credit card I got my card refunded within ten days (Big up to Halifax!!!). Some people I believe who paid by debit card are still fighting.

I've got a credit card, give the money to me :D

Freedom Direct are ABTA registered (ABTA Member F5038), you should have no problems at all paying with a debit card. It may also be cheaper as you may be charged for using a credit card.

If you pay by debit card you start by assuming that if something goes wrong you lose everything and anything you get back is a bonus - but only after a load of hassle.

If you pay by credit card you start by assuming that if anything goes wrong you complain to your CC company and get a full refund

If a debit card has the VISA logo on it you have the same protection as a credit card !

  • If the operator you've used is ATOL protected - then your money is protected. Doesn't matter how you paid as long as you have a receipt showing their ATOL number

My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are S0466/3973. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. Atol numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.
