Philips DVDR 880

Options
My Philips DVDR 880 has not seen a lot of use but has been giving problems for a while now. When I attempt to make a recording from my video player or a dvd player the recording starts O.K. but after 4 or 5 seconds cuts out and the display on the recorder shows the following message D7FC58256. After several attempts including turning off the power, opening and closing the drawer etc, it eventually starts to record and works fine. If I wish to record again after a day or so I have to go through the same ritual.
I also notice that occasionaly when I try to play back a dvd that has been recorded and finalised on the same machine it comes up with the message 'Data Not Recognised' or 'Blank Disc'. Again after several attempts at turning it on and off, opening and closing the drawer etc, it will eventually play.

Please could anyone kindly advise as to whether it is worth trying to have the recorder repaired and would be likely to be expensive?

I am copying my video library to DVD to save space.

I may decide to replace the 880 anyway and if so would be looking for a machine that would play and record both DVD- and DVD+ formats. Would DVD RAM be of any use to me? What would also be important is to be able to record some of my American Region 1 DVD's. Is there such a thing as a Multi Region DVD Recorder? I would like to purchase a machine that is bang up to date and would look to spend up to around £500.00+

Please could someone kindly advise on this as well.
Any advice and information would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Chris.

Not an expert but it sound as though the pick-up is clogged with fluff, therefore not recognising the disc.

    Have you tried cleaning head?

Personally I find that it's sometimes better to take the lid off and very gently brush the pick up. Give it a good blow always makes me feel better too.

Many thanks Rizla, yes I have tried cleaning the head but the problem persists. It really is frustrating and I am inclined to throw the machine over the nearest cliff!

    Hi Chris.

These machines apparantly suffer from heat caused during the burning process and that fault is mentioned in a few posts. Common problem/fault it would appear.

I assume that you have tried different manufactured discs?

Was the machine stored for a while in a room that wasn't heated?Condensation could have built up.

Other than contacting Philips directly and perhaps calling a Philips specialist Then it sounds like it may end up in the bin. :D

    Hint-

If you can get through to a philips agent, ask to be put through to the workshop and speak directly to an engineer. I have done this before, making out that I'm a washing machine engineer or something allied to thier trade and they are then very happy ot speak with a fellow compatriate. :A :A
