How long does fresh yeast last ?

  • Thanks. I get it from Sainsburys and it comes in a paper bag, so that's probably the problem. I'll put it in a plastic pot in future.
  • I've tried searching for this answer but can't find it, so sorry if I'm repeating an old question.

What's the best way to store fresh yeast in the fridge? I know I can freeze what I don't need to save it for another time, but sometimes I buy it a day or so before I want to use it and sometimes it dries out. Can I keep it in an airtight container or does it need to breathe?

    Thanks for any help.

There are more suggestions in this thread; I'll merge this later to keep ideas together.

  • Thanks. I wasn't sure it was appropriate to reactivate a 2 year old post and it didn't answer my question, which is why I didn't post there originally.
  • I have already tried using the refrigerating technique, and it will work for me. Refrigerating yeast is that you can use the same package for the next 4 months after it is opened. Feezing yeast can be used for up to 6 months after the package is opened.
