The Tech Guys

Options
Hey,

On the 11th of February I took my laptop into repair as the 'L' key had fell off, since it was going away I told them to fix the ethernet port and the tiny crack on the laptop lock thing.

I eventually got it back today, and they had stolen half of my memory!! (512mb); and I couldnt flick the switch to turn my internet on, and the system crashes everytime it tries to do something, as 512mb on Vista Home Premium is a complete no go!

I called back, seriously full with rage, and they just said we will have to take it back for repair again. My mum said we'll go down tomorrow and have a go in the store, and she'll like demand to speak to a manager and ask for a temporary pc, and when they go "its company policy to not issue replacements" she's going to say "is it company policy to steal your customers hardware and see if they notice?"

Just like want to know what we can do really.. What our are rights?

Thank you for reading!

Ps: Were paying £8 month for "aftercare support".

Have you got into the inside of the computer to find the missing memory? Or can you find it without?

Hope you manage to get them to do something about it, I dont really know what your rights are. Did they charge you for the repair? What did they say in regard to the missing memory - just that they would take it in for repair and replace the missing memeory?

I noticed when I started the computer it was being really slow, and I saw one of my ram sticks (not sure of correct term!) had been removed as my PC said it only had 512mb.

The repair is free, however im forced to call there 0870 number and in regard to the missing memory the guy on the phone said "oh" and there book it in for repair. I did say "no, your coming to me" and that arguement went for a few minutes, then I just said fine whatever..

How have you concluded it was stolen rather than being put in by mistake?

Ok then, why have you assumed it was stolen rather than not being put in by mistake?

How could they not notice + realise one was missing, and one was still in the motherboard they replaced!

I think he pocketed it tbh and thought I wouldnt notice.
But im really  at them; because its come back worse then when I sent it in.

Don't you think they have access to hundreds of components etc, why would they try and take something where someone would easily notice?

If your wondering why well perhaps the person got distracted eg telephone going off, someone asking a question, there could be hundreds of reasons.

I've noticed you've mentioned your mum a couple of times. Does this mean your perhaps young and haven't and a job yet?

If so when you get a job you'll notice your rarely left alone without any interruptions to get on with things and also will have a heavy workload, probably more than you can actually get done in the time you'll work that day. These sorts of things can cause mistakes to happen. If you have a job, surely you'd know this?

By the way. Your mum isn't going to help matters tomorrow if she takes the "smart a.ss comments" road. If you p1ss off the people who you want to help you you won't get much out of them.

Nobody's going to risk their job over a five quid bit of hardware.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

    Exactly.

People use words like "stolen" simply to play victim. Anyone with any common sense will know it's obviously a mistake.

Tech guys don't have a great reputation to be honest, for two reasons. Firstly many of them don't have a knowledge of computers any better than your friend of a friend who tinkers with computers, they tend to blame everything on either MOBO or RAM simply because they know these are common faults and likely, but they should at least test for them. Secondly, there have been reports of stealing parts in the past...however this has always tended to be more expensive parts like Graphics Cards and not RAM which is relatively cheap right now.
