Many thanks for some very useful information. I was looking at it from a systems perspective, I think there are two methods, Direct Clearance, this is when the transaction is carried out simultaneously. The other method is to collect the info and manage the transaction yourself. Thinking about it, the second method is perhaps open to abuse and can cause every one problems.

I am still no wiser about writing a program to convert a normal website to an E-commerce one.

can you not front end a oscommerce site with your own design ??

    http://www.oscommerce.com/

it has secpay and other direct payment modules built in , and it's free

    Payment Functionality
    • Accept numerous offline payment processing (cheque, money orders, offline credit care processing, ..)
    • Accept numerous online payment processing (PayPal, 2CheckOut, Authorize.net, iPayment, ..)
    • Disable certain payment services based on a zone basis
I've worked on a friends site and it was easy to set up the payments

Browntoa is correct if you have a catalogue of Items, Oscommerce or similar free online stores (I use Cubecart) are the way to go.

A shortcut to putting a button on a web page that will create a Paypal payment to you is http://www.mals-e.com/ (also free, though Paypal fees will apply).
