If you have an old style "master" socket, which looks just like any other phone socket, then I presume you have extensions for other rooms plugged into this using one or more of those piggy-back plugs. In which case unplug everything from this socket (including all your extensions).

Plug in one of your phones directly into the master socket (and nothing else). There's no need for a filter. Is the fault still there? If yes, then try another phone.

If the fault is present with each of the phones plugged into the master socket, then that proves that it must be on BT's part of the line.

Ok Donny Dave, I only have 2 working sockets. The master socket has the downstairs phone in and the socket upstairs is for internet. I've taken everything out and plugged just the phone into the master socket. Got a ringtone and the clarity is much better. Tried making and receiving a call and yes no problems.

As soon as I plug the modem/router in it's at this point the line gets very crackly and when I dial the landline from my mobile it's either dead or engaged.

So we may have sourced the problem but why has it suddenly done this and how the hell is it rectified. The router works fine when plugged in but causes the phone to go wrong. Yet it all worked fine a week ago.

I have changed my ISP and went live on Friday of last week. Surely this isn't the cause?

    Any help much appreciated

Have you fitted a new filter?

Buy a new one and try it but not a cheap one, they are not all the same.

It could be your router is faulty but try a new filter first.

Have you moved anything around, change wires over?

Not all phone cables are wired the same US/UK standards.

Brit Brat, I had fitted a new filter but have now swapped with another to see if it makes any difference. No difference. I have changed the cables, no difference.

I've now tried running both PC and phone from the master socket, completely illiminating the upstiars socket but it can only handle one or the other not both.

Running just my PC and the noise margin reading on my router is 6.1 which to be honest isn't that great. When I try running both PC and phone no matter which socket the noise margin goes into minus and the phone goes very crackly and broadband is non-existent.

    I've got a headache

Would fitting a NTE5 socket upstairs help the issue?

No The NTE box would make no difference now, it just makes it easy to isolate all internal wiring when you have a BT NTE main box.

Don't complicate it any more untill you find the problem now and later you can think about making any changes to wiring.

But you are getting closer to sorting it out.

Do you know anyone with another router you can try or do you have an old ADSL USB modem (frog) you could try.

I would be thinking either your modem is faulty or phone is faulty but could be both, you need to try other devices now to rule them out/in as being the fault.

I did not quite understand that part.

Do you have two ADSL lines?

ADSL is line specific you can't take your router and use it on someone elses line even if that line is yours and not the line the ADSL service has been set up on to supply.

I do have another router turning up (freebie with new ISP) so that should settle that score.

No I don't have 2 ADSL lines. What I meant was, when both the phone and router are connected the noise margin on the router is very very poor and thus will not connect to the internet.

If I unplug the phone the noise margin is better although not great but I'm then able to connect to the internet.

It's the same if I unplug the router and leave the phone connected the quality of the phone reception is alot better.

I've tried 2 different phones so know thats ok. Just leaves the router to be tested and then dodgy wiring.

    Headache getting slightly better :D

Wait for that and use any new cables that come with it.

Let us know how you got on.

Quite strange that I can have both internet and phone connected with no apparent problem this morning. Phone still a bit buzzy bit at least they're both on and working.

I wonder if all this disfunction is down to the new ISP settling in?

Well the phone line and internet connection have been stable for 2 days now. So somebody has done something somewhere.

Still a bit of a buzz on the line but at least it's working. Touches wood several times.

Thanks to everyone who contributed their advice and help.

Glad it seems to have sorted itself out for you - will keep my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

tony....it's extremely unlikely that this is fixed in the long term...fingers crossed anyway
