It would be even more expensive if the government hadn't postponed a scheduled recent increase.
I do a lot of travelling and have to say that BP typically seem the most expensive. They are certainly a good few pence a litre more then anyone else round here and then you hear about the record billions of profit they're making.
Shell are supposedly the cheapest nationally. Even beating the supermarkets on a national average.0 -

Tend to agree we are being ripped off.

When Tesco offer the same promotion, their fuel prices mysteriously and rather suspiciously seem to rise a few pence just prior to it.0 -
Of course we are. About 75% of what we pay is tax and the fuel companies still make millions per minute.
i) Fuel companies put price up when the cost of crude oil goes up, but when the cost of crude drops they don't drop the prices saying the cost of crude isn't a significant component in the fuel price.
ii) Fuel is the only thing where you are levied tax on tax. Fuel duty is added to the suppliers price and then we are levied VAT on the total amount.
Even in the U.S. they are starting to complain because it is now over $2.00 a gallon (!).
It's ironic that the real reason the Iraq war occured was because of oil, and one of the reasons the price of crude oil is going up is the instability in the arab region due to the effect of the Iraq invasion.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

And things are only going to get worse ... I think we will see the £10 gallon before the end of 2010. Americas desire for fuel seems never ending and the Chinese are now more than willing to buy whatever they can get their hands on.
I guess it is a sellers market and will continue to be so ... I don't think all the picketing and protests will do much. It may bring down the cost of fuel but the government will get the money back some other way: increase the duty on alchohol, add a few pence onto income tax, cut backs on benefits and pensions, more education and health cutbacks, might even tax internet access?
